In an era of dwindling funds for athletics, it’s pretty amazing that each school in the six-team West Valley League has now completed refurbishing its baseball field, with Taft unveiling its newest creation at today’s alumni game.

That means Chatsworth, Cleveland, Birmingham, El Camino Real, Granada Hills and Taft all have fields with open backstops. That costs lots of money, time and effort to change, but the current and future players will benefit because of the commitment of coaches, parents and the community.

Of course, it would be great if other schools in the City Section could afford their own makeovers, but there’s a passion for baseball in the San Fernando Valley like in few other places, and it’s reflected in Valley teams that have won every City championship in baseball except one since 1974.
