January 31, 2009 | 10:01 pm

DeRonn Scott scored 16 points for Etiwanda (18-4), which snapped Taft's 13-game winning streak. Michael Williams had 19 points for the Toreadors (18-3), who trimmed a nine-point deficit to two on Pierson Williams' three-pointer with 15 seconds left before Finn's free throws put the game away.

Boys' basketball: Here come the Hearlihys

January 30, 2009 | 10:17 pm

Harvard-Westlake girls' basketball Coach Melissa Hearlihy is going to be spending lots of time as a spectator in the coming years, because she's got a pair of sons who definitely are going to make an impact on the court.

Josh Hearlihy, a 6-foot-4 freshman at Harvard-Westlake, is averaging 15 points for the freshman team and figures to be a varsity contributor next season. He can shoot and he's got lots of basketball knowledge, having grown up watching his mother coach.

Then there's 8-year-old Kyle, a third-grader who's already 4-9 and could be 6-8, 260 pounds. "He said the other day, 'I don't know if I want to be a professional football player or professional basketball player,' " said Bill Hearlihy, the father.

Boys' basketball: Loyola holds off Harvard-Westlake

January 30, 2009 |  9:19 pm

To see Loyola students charging the home court of Harvard-Westlake told the story of how emotional and important Loyola's 91-88 victory over the Wolverines was Friday night in a game for first place in the Mission League.

Jordan Gathers, a junior guard who missed seven weeks of the season with a separated shoulder, scored 27 points for the Cubs, who survived some missed free throws in the fourth quarter to improve to 16-5 overall and 9-1 in league. Harvard-Westlake, which had won 11 consecutive games, dropped to 16-6 and 8-1.

Damiene Cain scored 25 points for Harvard-Westlake, with Austin Kelly and Erik Swoope adding 20 points apiece.

Loyola had much more balance on offense than in the game it lost to Harvard-Westlake three weeks ago.
