Football: St. Bonaventure finalizes its 2009 schedule

January 12, 2009 | 10:44 am

Sb_logo Ventura St. Bonaventure, winner of the CIF state Division III bowl game the last two years, has put together a football schedule that will allow it to contend for another bowl appearance in 2009.

The Seraphs will start their season with a Sept. 4 road game against Bellflower St. John Bosco, followed by a home game against Pac-5 champion Long Beach Poly on Sept. 11. Then they travel for a Sept. 18 day game at Los Angeles Jordan, play Encino Crespi on Sept. 25 at Crespi and end nonleague action with an Oct. 2 game at La Puente Bishop Amat.

Absent from the schedule is neighborhood rival Westlake Village Oaks Christian, which is playing Alemany, Muir, Sammamish (Wash.) Skyline, Venice and Long Beach Jordan in nonleague games.

What it means is once again, at the end of the season, the section commissioners are going to have to make a decision on which school deserves a Division III invitation if both win section titles. Oaks Christian would be in better position this time to convince commissioners that it deserves the berth if it knocks off highly regarded Skyline. But if St. Bonaventure beats Poly, advantage goes to the Seraphs.
