Football: Boyd to make announcement Feb. 1

January 25, 2009 |  8:56 pm

Boyd Los Angeles Jordan two-way standout James Boyd, the City Section player of the year, said Sunday he would announce his college choice at 7 p.m. Feb. 1 after returning from his official visit to Washington next weekend.

USC, which just hosted Boyd during his official visit over the weekend, appears to be a strong front-runner.

"Right now it's SC," said Boyd, who has also visited Oregon State. "Washington has to come with a miracle."

USC picked up Boyd in a Lincoln Town Car during his visit and put him and other recruits up in the downtown L.A. Marriott.

"He had the five-star treatment," Jordan Coach Elijah Asante said.

UPDATE: After checking with Boyd, Asante said Monday afternoon that the star recruit was picked up in a Lincoln Town Car, not a limousine.

Limousines are a recruiting violiation, but I guess since USC used paid players like Reggie Bush and never got punished, whats another violation in recruiting?

JospephineBruin

limo and marriott. aren't these recruiting violations?

please let me know. i'm a little confused.

where can recruits stay on offical visits. dorms? is there a $$ limit if they stay at a hotel? who picks up the tab for the limo? or how much $$ can be spent on recruits?

Happy4LA

This didn't happen, just like Joe McKnight "mispoke" when he said Reggie Bush was on a conference call with Pete Carroll and Reggie Bush another violation that usc was not punished for.

NCAA

FYI....

13.5.2.1 General Restrictions.
A member institution may pay the prospective student-

athlete's actual round-trip transportation costs for his or her official visit to its campus from any location, provided the prospective student-athlete returns to the original point of departure, or if return transportation is provided to the prospective student-athlete's home, educational institution or site of competition, the cost does not exceed round-trip expenses from the prospective student-athlete's original point of departure. Use of a limousine or helicopter for such transportation is prohibited. (Revised: 1/9/06, 5/26/06)

Here is the actual NCAA rule that Pete Carroll broke in doing this. If the Times is not in bed with USC like most UCLA fans think, I would expect to see a story on this new USC recruiting violation. This is Carroll's third violations (2 illegal visits to Loyola) documented in the last 6 months.

It's only a violation if USc paid for it. If a bunch member of the football team all give a little for the limo ride and it is no violation. the author assumes USC paid for it.

Please note, don't change your original story and add a note. Keep your story the same, and then add clarification.

BTW- can you confirm with the car company used what they sent? Don't you think this warants further investigation, or is the times going to sweep this under the rug like Jarrett's free rent, Reggie Bush's money from an agent, and OJ Mayo's money from an agent.

You think you guys would investigate what is going on over there..

Southbay

When did a Lincoln Towncar become a limo?

Jim

sounds like some of you Bruins didn't read the Times restriction on posting if you are under 13 years of age.

Grow up.

OJ Simpson

Jim:

Stick to the topic. I know that is asking alot of a trojie apologist.

Limos, Towncars and the NCAA.

It's only a matter of time....

Hey Ben, why don't you put a call in to the limo, errrr, Town Car company and get the real story?

Ben Bolch,
Wana get away? -Southwest Airlines

Bet you feel like a dumb butt. To all the USC haters, way to jump the gun.

@ All UCLA Ruins Fans

What in the hell is wrong with you people? Like the blogger Jim said "GROW UP" Give me a break! Do you remember who you guys hired as a head coach? Well let me remind you. He left U of Washington and U of Colorado in a mess. His name Slick Rick.

So before you sorry playing baby blue jersey's start talking, please look in the mirror. I wonder what Slick Rick is offering. Maybe free classes on how to place bets during March Madness.

How can you trust Slick Rick? Lets give Slick Rick a chance maybe he doesn't do the office pools anymore. I sure would like to know from Slick Rick, who he is betting on for the Super Bowl.

trOJan

Funny you bring up "Slick Rick" because so far, he hasn't done any wrongdoing at UCLA- all that stuff was at other schools. Just remember, it's not just the Bruins who dislike your school but practically the entire nation.

Also, nice of a coach to rip his own player to leave to chase his dreams of going to the NFL. I guess he didn't want to lose $14+ million like the guy who is playing backup to Warner who stayed one year too long.

P.S. It must also hurt knowing that your basketball program has resorted to the same dirty tactics as its football program but yet are still light years behind the basketball program across town

Larz is an idiot

hey Larz, did you see that little "Update" word that is bold and underlined. It means that it was inserted way after the story was published. But hey, whats the difference to a little trOJie.

You're forgiven, after all, you had a second tier education

Irishftbl

They just need to separate the kids that want to go to college and be true student athletes and the others can do semi pro until they think they're good enough to join the NFL. All these kids going to college for a couple of years and either being as stupid or more than they were when they enrolled needs to be stopped. They are just taking spots from kids who would like to play football and use that as a way to get an education. NCAA needs to live up to its name.

fox

uhhh and who has the most heismans? national titles? and the most bowl wins?......
