Boys' basketball: Pangos Dream Classic underway in Long Beach

January 3, 2009 |  3:22 pm

The 15th annual Pangos Dream Classic is underway at Long Beach City College, where several of the Southland’s top teams are playing in a one-day extravaganza. Mater Dei, ranked No. 1 by The Times, is scheduled to tip off against Gahr in the main event at 8 p.m.

Prior to that, however, are perhaps the day's two best matchups: No. 11 Windward versus No. 10 Leuzinger at 5 p.m., followed by No. 7 Dominguez versus No. 5 Etiwanda at 6:30 p.m.

The first game, pitting Moore League rivals Long Beach Cabrillo and Long Beach Jordan, is at halftime, with Jordan leading, 41-28. The contest features two standout centers going head to head -- Jordan senior Stephan Heard and Cabrillo sophomore Jovan Pearson. Jordan is currently ranked No. 23 by The Times.

Next on the court will be La Verne Lutheran and Brentwood.

Check back for game updates throughout the day.
