Boys' basketball: It's showdown time in the Big 8 League

January 5, 2009 |  8:45 am

Leonard What a terrific opening matchup in the Big 8 League, with Riverside King (9-1), ranked No. 3 by The Times, taking on No. 20 Corona Centennial (13-1) on Tuesday night at Centennial in a Big 8 League basketball opener.

King has aspirations of challenging unbeaten Mater Dei for a Southern Section Division I-AA championship and a Southern California regional title.

The Wolves are led by San Diego State-bound, 6-foot-7 Kawhi Leonard.

Centennial starts three sophomores who are the team's leading scorers -- Gelaun Wheelwright, Michael Caffey and Dominique Dunning.

Game time is 6:15 p.m. It's worth a trip to the Inland Empire for this one.

Centennial's only loss was to Los Angeles Loyola. King has been playing tough teams all season and has been helped by transfer students Tony Nell and Chris Harriel.
