Boys' basketball: Winning all in a night's work for No. 1 Mater Dei

January 3, 2009 | 10:12 pm

Another game, another easy win for Mater Dei.

In case you're counting, that's 14 wins in 14 games, and the question surrounding the Monarchs these days is not whether they will win but whether they will be seriously challenged. That has happened a few times this season, but Saturday night's contest against Gahr was not one of them.

Mater Dei won, 90-66, in the last game of the 15th annual Pangos Dream Classic at Long Beach City College, taking its foot off the gas in the second half and coasting to the finish.

David Wear finished with 26 points, brother Travis added 10 and Tyler Lamb scored 18 points off the bench for the Monarchs, ranked No. 1 in the Southland by The Times. Devin Golston, Gahr's only returning player, led the Gladiators with 14 points.

"Nobody is worried about getting theirs," Mater Dei assistant coach Bob Serven said. "They work together and like each other. A lot of people find that hard to believe in this day and age."

The one-day event, hosted by Long Beach Cabrillo High, consisted of five games and featured six of The Times' top 25 teams.
