Football: Loyola prevails, 17-6

November 1, 2008 |  9:09 pm

Loyola (5-3, 1-0) celebrated its first league victory in three years on Saturday night after defeating Bishop Amat, 17-6, in a Serra League game.

Running back Anthony Barr, coming off a hip pointer injury that forced him to the sideline for the second half of last week's loss to Alemany, showed no ill effects. He carried the ball 40 times, rushing for 216 yards and one touchdown, a 68-yard run.

A 28-yard field goal by Mauricio Alfonso with 7:16 left gave the Cubs some breathing room.

Loyola's defense played magnificiently. Ned Kirby and Robbie Paton contributed interceptions. Loyola gets unbeaten Sherman Oaks Notre Dame next Saturday at Glendale. Bishop Amat, ranked No. 10 by The Times, drops to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in league.

Football: Loyola defense gets stop again

November 1, 2008 |  9:00 pm

Loyola's defense hasn't allowed a score all night, and the Cubs just stopped Bishop Amat one more time, turning over the ball with 3:09 left and Loyola on top, 17-6.

Loyola has the ball on its own 40 and will try to run out the clock to get its first league win since the 2005 season.

Football: Loyola takes 17-6 lead

November 1, 2008 |  8:50 pm

Loyola has taken a 17-6 lead over Bishop Amat with 7:16 left on a 28-yard field goal by Mauricio Alfonso.

The Cubs got down to the Bishop Amat nine-yard line before settling for the field goal.

Football: Loyola defense comes through

November 1, 2008 |  8:40 pm

Nick Llaca stopped Bishop Amat running back Deshawn Gaisie two yards short of a first down on fourth down from the Loyola 32, turning over the ball to the Cubs.

The third quarter has just ended, with Loyola holding a 14-6 lead and having a first down on Bishop Amat's 37. Anthony Barr has rushed for 184 yards in 27 carries. The Cubs are giving him the ball again and again.

Football: More special teams problems for Loyola

November 1, 2008 |  8:35 pm

Bishop Amat has taken over the ball on Loyola's 39-yard line with just under two minutes left in the third quarter after a bad snap on a punt caused punter Chad Smith to drop his knee to the ground.

Loyola is clinging to a 14-6 lead despite a blocked field goal, blocked punt and four-yard punt.

Football: Bishop Amat begins comeback

November 1, 2008 |  8:22 pm

On Loyola's opening possession of the third quarter, Bishop Amat's Jesse Prieto blocked a punt, picked up the ball and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown.

Suddenly, in a game that Loyola has dominated, the Lancers are very much in the game, trailing, 14-6, with 9:49 left in the third quarter after failing to get a two-point conversion.

Bishop Amat is very good at comebacks. The Lancers rallied from a 24-0 deficit earlier this season to defeat Orange Lutheran.

Football: Loyola 14, Bishop Amat 0 at halftime

November 1, 2008 |  7:57 pm

Loyola has come away with a 14-0 lead over Bishop Amat at halftime. The Cubs have dominated but could be leading by 21-0 or 28-0.

Anthony Barr has rushed for 122 yards in 14 carries. The Cubs have two interceptions while dropping Bishop Amat quarterback Jerry McClanahan four times for losses.

Football: Barr shows off speed for Loyola

November 1, 2008 |  7:50 pm

It was only a matter of time before Loyola running back Anthony Barr broke off a long run, and it happened with 1:47 left in the second quarter. He raced 68 yards for a touchdown, giving the Cubs a 14-0 lead over No. 10-ranked Bishop Amat in a Serra League opener.

Barr also picked up a 15-yard penalty for excessive celebration, but I don't think Coach Jeff Kearin was too upset. The usually quiet Barr showed he was into the game, an intensity level that has been used by Loyola's defense to record four sacks.
