Football: Orange Lutheran takes control

October 24, 2008 |  9:52 pm

Kyle Dravis broke loose for a 40-yard touchdown run, and Orange Lutheran has taken a 34-14 lead over St. John Bosco with just under three minutes left.

The Lancers are looking like the Lancers of old, pressuring St. John Bosco quarterback Keith Price, who was sacked on consecutive plays before Dravis' touchdown. Price had come in with two interceptions and has been intercepted twice.

Los Osos running back Arby Fields' fourth touchdown, on a 36-yard reception from quarterback Richard Brehaut, gave the Grizzlies a 27-21 lead over Upland midway through the third quarter. Fields has also scored twice on rushing plays and once on a punt return.

Upland quarterback Josh Nunes just threw a long pass that was intercepted by defensive back Sean Alston and returned to the Highlanders' 29-yard line.

Football: Rivas helps Canyon take 20-19 lead

October 24, 2008 |  9:34 pm

I was wondering when Canyon's Chris Rivas was going to make his presence felt during Friday's Foothill League showdown against Hart at College of the Canyons. And while it took a little longer than expected, the standout senior finally delivered in the third quarter.

Rivas fielded a booming punt from C.J. Reyes and returned the ball across midfield and into Indians' territory. A couple plays later, he took a handoff from Jordan Adamczyk, broke a pair of tackles, and found the endzone 29 yards later to give Canyon a 20-19 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Football: Quarterback duel a dud at halftime

October 24, 2008 |  9:07 pm

Upland and Los Osos are engaged in a captivating Baseline League game at halftime, with the Highlanders leading the host Grizzlies, 21-20, but little of the drama has been generated by the teams' heralded quarterbacks.

Upland quarterback Josh Nunes has completed five of 11 passes for 59 yards. Los Osos quarterback Richard Brehaut has completed eight of 17 passes for 92 yards with an interception that was returned for a touchdown. Brehaut also wasn't ready for a snap that squirted past him for a 23-yard loss.

Neither quarterback has thrown for a touchdown.

Los Osos running back Arby Fields has scored three touchdowns, two on carries and another on a 62-yard punt return. But Fields was penalized for excessive celebration on the return, turning a short PAT into a 35-yarder that was blocked. That extra point is the difference right now.

Fields has rushed for 83 yards in 11 carries. Upland's Osahon Irabor has 76 yards rushing and a touchdown in only three carries.

Upland will get the ball to start the second half.

Football: Upland takes 21-20 lead

October 24, 2008 |  8:55 pm

Upland's offense is starting to click. The Highlanders drove 80 yards and scored on a fourth-and-one play when Davion Fleming ran into the end zone to give Upland a 21-20 lead over Los Osos with 38 seconds left in the second quarter.

Football: Canyon and Hart locked up at 13-13 at the half

October 24, 2008 |  8:50 pm

Just when it appeared as if Canyon might finally put some distance between itself and Hart during Friday night's Foothill League showdown at College of the Canyons, the Indians defense came up with the biggest play of the first half.

Trailing 13-7 in the second quarter, Hart's Nick Ovendale pressured the Jordan Adamczyk into making an errant throw, one in which Michael Aguilar intercepted at midfield and returned to the Canyon 40-yard line.

The Indians made sure not let the good field position go to waste. Demitri Diamond, who has looked like a man among boys at times, ended up scoring on an 8-yard run to tie the score, 13-13, with 3:56 left in the first quarter.

We're at halftime now and things are still deadlocked at 13-13. Varsity Times Insider readers can expect an update at the end of the third quarter.

Football: Orange Lutheran leads, 21-14

October 24, 2008 |  8:44 pm

Orange Lutheran leads St. John Bosco, 21-14, at halftime.

Terrence Brown contributed a huge play for Orange Lutheran, intercepting a Keith Price pass deep inside Lancer territory.

St John Bosco's defense has been slow in picking up Orange Lutheran's many offensive formations and has been burned several times for touchdowns.

I still think the team that has the ball last could win this one.
