Football: What was Friday night's biggest 'upset'

I realize a lot of folks wouldn't consider all the following results "upsets" depending on which side of the fence they're sitting on, but I figured these were at least some of Friday's best games.

Feel free to use the comment board if you feel the need to elaborate on your vote.

Football: Crespi-Notre Dame game is bigger than ever

It's going to get a little wacky in the San Fernando Valley this coming week, because Crespi (6-1) is playing host to Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (7-0) on Friday night in a Serra League opener that figures to be one of the best high school football games of the season.

These neighborhood rivals appear to be reaching peak form. Crespi shutout St. Francis, 34-0, on Friday. Notre Dame shutout St. Paul, 35-0.

Let's get down to the business of which team is going to win.

I saw Crespi in its worst performance of the season, a 31-14 loss to St. Bonaventure. The Celts didn't block, didn't tackle and didn't perform in their biggest game to date.

I haven't seen Notre Dame, but the Knights have improved each week.

The bottom line is which team's offensive line will be best able to protect its quarterback. That's going to mean the difference between victory and defeat.

I can't wait to see the traffic jam in Encino or the battle for parking. And the game should be good, too. Arrive early and stay late, because I expect a classic.

Football: Brody Rohach talks about Moorpark's victory

Well, thanks to its 20-17 victory over Thousand Oaks on Friday, Moorpark pushed itself to the front of the Marmonte League title chase. A strong defensive effort coupled with the late-game heroics of junior quarterback Brody Rohach sealed the victory for the Musketeers.

I had the chance to do a quick video interview with Rohach following the game. Check this out:

Football: Orange Lutheran wins, 34-21

The Orange Lutheran of old returned on Friday, with the Lancers knocking off unbeaten St. John Bosco, 34-21.

The Lancers' defense refused to allow St. John Bosco quarterback Keith Price to get loose on scrambles. Price was intercepted by Gabe Lemon and Terrence Brown and finished with 188 yards passing.

Lutheran took charge in the fourth quarter behind a punishing ground game. It appears this team has finally recovered from blowing a 24-0 lead to Bishop Amat in the second game of the season to become the Trinity League title favorite.

Football: Moorpark downs Thousand Oaks, 20-17

Greg_morrissey

Junior quarterback Brody Rohach connected on a 19-yard pass to James Dearborn for the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter as visiting Moorpark (6-1, 3-0) defeated Marmonte League rival Thousand Oaks (6-1, 3-1), ranked No. 24 by The Times, 20-17, on Friday night.

Rohach, who usually splits time at quarterback with injured Brian Blechen, completed 20 of 41 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Early in the second half, he threw seven consecutive incomplete passes, but hit his stride on the Musketeers’ penultimate possession, connecting on passes of 13 and 15 yards to push Moorpark into the red zone.

100_4010 “He showed a lot of poise under pressure,” Moorpark Coach Tim Lins said. “He came through when he needed to.”

Moorpark’s Tyler Peterson spearheaded the Musketeers’ ground assault, rushing for 88 yards in 27 carries.

Thousand Oaks running back John Lister, pictured left, finished with 83 yards in 16 carries. His 43-yard touchdown run in the second quarter gave him a team-record 340 career points.

Quarterback Ian Shultis completed nine of 15 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown. He was picked off by Moorpark’s Tim Vizzi on the Lancers’ final possession.

Football: Hart defeats Canyon, 29-27

The stop Hart's Jake Stephens made on Geffen Camp during the fourth quarter of Friday night's game against Canyon might not end up in the boxscore, but that doesn't necessarily mean the sequence wasn't one of the most important of the game.

Camp was attempting to pick up a first down on fourth and one from the Cowboys own 29-yard line when Stephens met him head on and denied Canyon what would have been a key first down.

Hart took over the ball, and made the Cowboys pay.

Spenser Souza scored on a 1-yard run three plays later to give the Indians a 29-20 lead with 6:56 remaining in the game. There's 2:03 left in the fourth quarter at this point, Hart is up 29-27, and the final seconds are ticking off the clock. The Indians win.

Football: Carter nabs momentum-changer for Upland

Upland's James Carter picked up a fumble by Los Osos' Arby Fields and rumbled 67 yards for a touchdown to pull the Highlanders within 34-28 early in the fourth quarter.
