Football: 'Help wanted' sign goes up at Carson

October 18, 2008 | 12:28 am

Carson Coach Michael Christensen essentially called out his team following its 6-5 loss to San Pedro on Friday, with two exceptions.

"There's only so much Torres and Presley can do," Christensen said, referring to quarterback Daniel Torres and tight end Morrell Presley. "Somebody else needs to step up."

Torres and Presley had good nights against the Pirates. Torres completed 17 of 37 passes for 190 yards and Presley had six catches for 77 yards. Presley also had a punt that pinned San Pedro at its one-yard line in the third quarter, leading to a safety on the next play.

Carson was undone by five fumbles, three of which it lost. Christensen said the Colts were also plagued by breakdowns along the offensive line, which was missing two starters because of injuries. And there was an ill-timed miscommunication between Torres and a receiver on fourth down that led to an incompletion during Carson's second-to-last drive.

"We're still searching for that consistency that we need," said Christensen, whose team has lost four games by a combined 20 points. "Until we learn to make plays, we're going to keep losing close games."

Football: A pleasant exchange with Mike Walsh

October 18, 2008 | 12:17 am

In a previous post I noted my sometimes contentious relationship with San Pedro Coach Mike Walsh while covering the Pirates for the Daily Breeze during the 1999 season.

So I didn't know what to expect when I approached him following San Pedro's 6-5 victory over Carson on Friday night, some nine years since we last spoke.

He extended his hand, asked my name and said, "Nice to meet you." Didn't see that coming. Maybe he's mellowed over the years or maybe I was hyper-sensitive. Or perhaps he just never gave me a second thought once I moved on to The Times and he didn't have to deal with me again.

Walsh was gracious on Friday, praising a first-team defense that has allowed only one touchdown this season and saying he expected four teams from the Marine League to be among the top eight seeds for the City Section Championship playoffs.

But I did get a taste of the coach I remembered when I asked him if the victory over the Colts established San Pedro as one of the teams to beat in the City Section.

Football: Don't bet on these picks

October 17, 2008 | 11:33 pm

It's official: I am an awful handicapper when it comes to high school football games. Call me the anti-swami.

This week, I thought Servite would end its 20-year winless drought against Mater Dei. Nope.

I picked Mission Viejo to beat Tesoro. Not even close.

I thought Carson would edge San Pedro. It didn't.

Only Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, which routed Alemany, came through as predicted.

I tallied up all of my picks so far this season and it isn't pretty. I have picked 14 outcomes correctly and 12 incorrectly. I don't expect anyone will ask me to tag along for a weekend in Las Vegas anytime soon.

Football: Tesoro deserves respect

October 17, 2008 | 10:39 pm

Tesoro's 31-14 victory over Mission Viejo Friday night was stunning because of how dominant the Titans were. The game wasn't close. They made four interceptions and relied on the running of Zach Mitchell, who gained 172 yards.

Tesoro was ranked No. 22 by The Times. Mission Viejo was ranked No. 3. Both came in with 5-0 records. But afterward, there can be no doubt who's the better team.

Football: Second-half domination pushes Mater Dei to victory

October 17, 2008 | 10:33 pm

The infamous streak between Orange County’s biggest rivals remains intact.

Senior running back Jaron Hytche rushed for 199 yards and had two touchdowns as Mater Dei (4-2, 1-0) extended its unbeaten streak over Servite (3-3, 0-1) to 20 consecutive games with a 42-21 victory in front of a 10,000-strong crowd at Cal State Fullerton on Friday night.

Mater Dei dominated the second half, holding Servite to 57 total offensive yards in the final 24 minutes. The Monarchs then cushioned their lead with a couple of touchdown runs by Jordan Allen, who finished with 55 yards and three touchdowns on the night.

Quarterback Matt Barkley completed 21 of 25 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns. He took advantage on a inconsistent Friar defense that had trouble tackling all night.

Servite’s Cody Fajardo connected on 14 of 23 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown even though he was pressured most of the night by Mater Dei’s swarming pass rush. Greg Portis finished with 155 yards and two touchdowns in 21 carries.

Christian Maldonado had a stellar game for Mater Dei. He blocked a Servite field goal attempt in the first quarter and recovered a second-half fumble that essentially ended the Friars’ comeback hopes.

The Friars entered the game as the favorite after beating Edison last month, a team Mater Dei lost to two weeks ago. Servite hasn’t beaten Mater Dei since 1988.

Football: San Pedro holds on for 6-5 victory

October 17, 2008 |  9:30 pm

Carson's last-gasp, fourth-down desperation pass from its own 40-yard line fell incomplete, sealing host San Pedro's 6-5 victory in the teams' Marine League opener. Neither team scored a touchdown.

Football: Tesoro is turning game into rout

October 17, 2008 |  9:27 pm

Zach Mitchell's 10-yard touchdown run completed an 80-yard, 12-play drive to start the third quarter and gave Tesoro a 28-7 lead over third-ranked Mission Viejo.

Mitchell, a junior, has rushed for 148 yards in 21 carries.

Football: Field goal gives San Pedro 6-5 lead

October 17, 2008 |  9:04 pm

Donald Jarrin's second field goal of the game, this one from 29 yards, gave San Pedro a 6-5 lead over Carson with 9 minutes 7 seconds left in the fourth quarter of the teams' Marine League opener at San Pedro.

Football: Mater Dei leads Servite, 27-21, at halftime

October 17, 2008 |  9:03 pm

Thanks to a couple touchdowns runs by Jaron Hytche and a fumble recovery by Christian Maldonado, Mater Dei leads Servite, 27-21, at halftime out here at Cal State Fullerton. Mater Dei, coming off a loss two weeks ago against Edison, has looked very good on offense.

Hytche has a game-high 147 yards in nine carries, scoring TDs on runs of 24 and 11 yards. Fellow running back Jordan Allen scored Mater Dei's latest TD on a nine-yard run. Quarterback Matt Barkley has completed 13 of 17 passes for 132 yards and two TDs.

Servite running back Greg Portis has tallied 138 yards and two TDs in 14 carries.

Be sure to check out my live game blog for all the details and for play-by-play coverage of the second half.
