Football: Was the kick really good in Westlake-Agoura game?

October 4, 2008 |  4:08 pm

Jim Benkert, the football coach at Westlake High, watched video Saturday from his team’s 23-22 loss to Agoura the night before and concluded that his kicker, Stephen Murphy, should have been credited for making a game-winning 41-yard field goal with 13 seconds left.

Instead, the officials ruled the kick was no good after the ball supposedly hit the crossbar and bounced back onto the field.

But video from an end zone camera showed that the ball hit the middle gooseneck bar that supports the crossbar — from behind — and holds up the crossbar before bouncing back toward the field.

“It was a million-to-one shot,” Benkert said.

It was another strange ending for an Agoura-Westlake game in a series of bizarre conclusions. In 2004, Westlake won on the game’s final play by returning a kickoff with multiple laterals. In 2006, Westlake won in double overtime when Agoura’s running back fumbled while headed into the end zone.

Agoura Coach Charlie Wegher, when told of the video, said, “We’ve lost a couple of controversial calls, so it was Westlake’s turn.”

It was Agoura’s first victory over Westlake in football since 1995.

Football: Kasdorf is new big man on campus at Notre Dame

October 3, 2008 | 10:38 pm

Who needs Garrett Green or Dayne Crist when you have Ryan Kasdorf around?

The 6-foot-2 junior quarterback used his big-time arm Friday night to guide Notre Dame to a 52-28 victory over Saugus, and perhaps more important, help the Knight faithful feel more comfortable about the fact that Green and Crist moved on to USC and Notre Dame, respectively.

Kasdorf completed 10 of 13 passes for the 329 yards and four touchdowns, and that was before halftime. He finished 13 of 20 with 371 yards by game's end. It should also be mentioned he rushed for 148 yards, highlighted by a 38-yard touchdown run and a 87-yard jaunt.

He threw scoring passes of 68 yards and 78 yards to Chris McNeill and added a 67-yarder and an 83-yarder to James Flynn. The Knights (4-0), ranked No. 8 in the Southland by The Times, built a 42-14 lead by halftime. Saugus' record dropped to 2-2.

Football: Edison topples division rival Mater Dei, 24-14

October 3, 2008 | 10:33 pm

100_3969 What a game!!

Junior quarterback Matt Viles, who came into the game battling flu-like symptoms, completed 15 of 28 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown as Edison (4-1), ranked No. 11 by The Times, took advantage of 17 Mater Dei penalties to beat their county rivals, 24-14, at Orange Coast College on Friday night.

Viles left the game briefly in the fourth quarter after taking a hit, but returned just in time to see running back Preston Spence score on a 60-yard touchdown run to put the game away. Spence finished with 103 yards rushing and three touchdowns, one of which came on a 30-yard reception.

Viles’ favorite target, senior wide receiver Jeff Crissman, had six catches for 79 yards.

“Matt has been battling the flu and he’s still not really over it,” Edison coach Dave White said. “He did an awesome job, especially when you consider the circumstances.”

The No. 6 Monarchs were stung by 157 yards in penalties and struggled to find any rhythm on offense in the second half.

Football: Long Beach Poly wins, 32-15

October 3, 2008 | 10:26 pm

Long Beach Poly's Daveon Barner scored three touchdowns and rushed for 125 yards to help the Jackrabbits (4-0) win their 74th consecutive Moore League game with a 32-15 victory over Lakewood.

Poly led, 25-0, at halftime and actually put together a passing attack, with quarterback Morgan Fennell completing six of nine for 100 yards. But in the second half, the Jackrabbits struggled through the air, with Fennell throwing an interception and almost having two other passes picked off.

Lakewood quarterback Jesse Scroggins threw two touchdown passes and finished 15 of 35 for 201 yards. Poly hurt itself with 14 penalties and two lost fumbles. But the Jackrabbits' defense was outstanding.

Next up for Poly is a Friday night game against St. Bonaventure at Long Beach Veterans Stadium.

Football: Saugus has absolutely no answer for Notre Dame's Kasdorf

October 3, 2008 |  9:19 pm

Is this Ryan Kasdorf guy for real? The 6-foot-2 junior quarterback is having his way with the Saugus defense, and in doing so, has helped Notre Dame, ranked No. 8 in the Southland by The Times, take a 42-14 lead at halftime.

Kasdorf has four touchdowns passes thus far, a 68-yarder and a 78-yarder to Chris McNeill, and a 67-yarder and an 83-yarder to James Flynn. Over the course of the first 16 minutes, Kasdorf completed 10 of 13 passes for 329 yards.

Football: Kasdorf is putting on a show for Notre Dame

October 3, 2008 |  8:35 pm

There has been plenty of action during the first half of the Notre Dame and Saugus game, and Ryan Kasdorf has been largely responsible for providing the highlights. The 6-foot-2 junior quarterback has thrown three touchdown passes, a 68-yarder and 78-yarder to Chris McNeill and a 67-yarder to James Flynn to give the host Knights a 28-8 lead with 8:14 left in the second quarter. Stay tuned for updates.

Football: Long Beach Poly opens 25-0 lead

October 3, 2008 |  8:30 pm

So much for the showdown in the Moore League. No. 2-ranked Long Beach Poly has opened a 25-0 halftime lead over No. 19 Lakewood.

Poly, which has rarely passed the ball this season, was trying to work on its passing game in the first half, with quarterback Morgan Fennell completing six of nine attempts for 100 yards, including a 37-yard screen pass that went for a touchdown by Daveon Barner.

The best part of another strong Poly team is its defense. I can't believe there's a stronger defense in Southern California. Let's see if somebody can find a weakness. I don't see one. The Jackrabbits have quick linemen, experienced linebackers and another talented secondary.

Poly will get No. 3 St. Bonaventure next Friday night at Long Beach Veterans Stadium, and I know the Seraphs are looking forward to the meeting, but they are going to face a huge challenge trying to move the ball against the Jackrabbits' defense.

As far as Lakewood is concerned, the Lancers had to forfeit four victories earlier in the week, and the absence of their top running back sure isn't helping.
