Football: Ward out as Dominguez coach

September 27, 2008 |  7:07 pm

Having tired of a situation in which he rarely got to coach his team, Cornell Ward quit as Compton Dominguez's football coach Friday night following the Dons' fourth consecutive loss to start the season.

Because of difficulty commuting from his job near USC as a youth minister, Ward said he had not attended practice since the week before Dominguez's season opener and didn't arrive at the host Dons' 25-6 loss to Redlands East Valley on Friday until the start of the first quarter.

"I was just doing the kids a disservice," Ward said Saturday.

Ward said he had been told he would have an opportunity to obtain a job on the Dominguez campus when he accepted the coaching position last month following the retirement of longtime coach Willie Donerson. But that job never materialized.

Ward said he took time off from work to attend practice the week of the Dons' 24-21 loss to St. George (Utah) Pine View on Aug. 30 but had not been able to make it to anything except games the last three weeks. He said he informed his players that he was leaving Friday night.

"It's a sad situation, but Dominguez will bounce back," said Ward, whose team has only four returning players from last season. "I don't think they'll lose another game."

Special teams coach Jose Rosa will become the interim head coach, Ward said, with Donerson returning on a volunteer basis. The Dons (0-4) play at Lawndale Leuzinger (2-1) on Friday.

"We've got to try to figure out a way to turn this thing around," Donerson said.

Football: 'Rocky Top' no longer Nunes' tune

September 27, 2008 |  4:01 pm

Upland quarterback Josh Nunes released a statement Saturday afternoon saying he had switched his commitment from Tennessee to Stanford after the Cardinal made an unexpected scholarship offer.

"I would like to apologize to the University of Tennessee as I had mistakenly thought that I would not have an opportunity to play at Stanford," Nunes said. "Stanford has always been my dream to attend and for the past three years, ever since I've been coached by him at his camp, it's been my dream to play for Coach [Jim] Harbaugh. Stanford is the only school I've camped at for the past few years and I believe that I have to follow my heart."

Unless he changes his mind again, Nunes, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound senior considered one of the top quarterbacks in Southern California, will now play in the same conference as UCLA-bound Richard Brehaut of Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos. Upland and Los Osos play on Oct. 24.

Spencer Rowe, a 6-foot-7 junior volleyball standout from Mission Viejo, has committed to UCLA. Rowe is a member of the U.S. Youth national team. It's rare for a junior to commit so early in volleyball, but Rowe said the "opportunity to play for Al Scates was too good to pass."

Football: Servite prevails over Edison, 29-17

September 26, 2008 | 10:20 pm

100_3918_3 Who needs D.J. Shoemate when you have Greg Portis (pictured)?

Portis, who appears to have inherited the game-breaking skills of his former Servite teammate, scored three touchdowns, including one off a 94-yard kickoff return, to spearhead the No. 7 Friars’ 29-17 comeback victory over No. 11 Huntington Beach Edison (3-1) at Cerritos College.

The senior running back’s big-play knack played a huge role in pushing Servite (3-1) out of its early-game funk. A 44-yard touchdown run by Portis in the second quarter swung the momentum in the Friars’ favor and they never looked back, beating their Orange County Pac-5 Division rivals for the second consecutive year.

Portis finished with 114 yards in 17 carries and Servite quarterback Cody Fajardo completed 13 of 16 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown.

Edison had a chance to take the lead on its final possession, but two dropped passes, including one to wide open receiver Michael Rivera on the Servite 10-yard line, killed a potential rally.

The Chargers got onto the scoreboard first on a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Viles to Jeff Crissman, but struggled to find offensive rhythm after its first three possessions.

A 4-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Davion Orphey midway through the third quarter cut Servite’s lead to 19-17. However, Edison hit another setback on its next possession when Servite defensive back Michael Marcoux recorded his second interception of the night.

Viles completed 22 of 39 passes for 246 yards and a touchdown. Orphey finished with 54 yards in 12 carries.

Football: St. Bony chant is bring on LB Poly

September 26, 2008 | 10:11 pm

Unbeaten St. Bonaventure (4-0), ranked No. 6 by The Times, had no trouble routing Crespi, 31-14, Friday night. Now the Seraphs have a bye week before an Oct. 10 game against No. 1 Long Beach Poly at Veterans Stadium.

"It's not rocket science," St. Bonaventure Coach Todd Therrien said of taking on the Jackrabbits. "You have to stop the run."

Football: Servite leads, 19-17, at end of third quarter

September 26, 2008 |  9:39 pm

Servite leads Edison, 19-17, heading into the fourth quarter, but it could have been a touchdown more.

QB Cody Fajardo completed a 46-yard pass to receiver Jamar Johnson that put Servite on the Edison 8-yard line. However, two sacks on Fajardo pushed the Friars back to the Edison 28, and Michael Loftus missed a 43-yard field-goal attempt.

The good news for Servite is it expanded its lead early in the quarter with a 53-yard touchdown pass from Fajardo to Christopher Nicholls. That TD allowed the Friars to stay in the lead despite a four-yard TD run by Edison's Davion Orphey.

Football: The rout is on for St. Bonaventure

September 26, 2008 |  9:30 pm

St. Bonaventure has increased its lead to 24-0 over Crespi early in the fourth quarter on a nine-yard touchdown run by Devon Blackledge.

The Seraphs came to play. The same can't be said for Crespi.
