Football: Simi Valley is dealing with the aftermath of train crash

September 13, 2008 | 12:33 pm

It didn't take long for the members of the Simi Valley football team to find out the disheartening news about the Metrolink crash that happened in Chatsworth on Friday. In fact, the Pioneers were on their way out to Ventura to face host Buena in the season opener.

Coach Todd Borowski had the unenviable task of informing his players about the tragedy just before kickoff. A day later, there is still cause for concern. Apparently, several of his players have family members that were directly affected by the incident.

"Around here, we know a lot of people who commute by train, so things have been tough. We're still trying to unravel this whole mess,'' Borowski said Saturday morning without going into specifics. "We're a tight-knit community, so when something like this hits one person, it hits us all.''

"We're hoping, and praying that everyone is safe. Each and every time my phone rings, I try not to think the worst and just hope for the best. In situations like this, that's all you can do. We're just trying to absorb everything right now. We're a family here at Simi Valley and are going to stick together.''

Football: Royal is indirectly affected by the Metrolink tragedy

September 13, 2008 | 12:01 pm

Royal Coach Gene Uebelhardt, his staff and players left their Simi Valley campus at 4:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon, bound for the San Fernando Valley. The destination was Chaminade High, but the Highlanders ran into several detours en route to West Hills because of the Metrolink crash in Chatsworth.

Arriving at the field on time for the season opener was the last thing on anyone's mind, though. Everyone from Royal was more concerned with the tragedy that had happened just minutes before they departed for what was expected to be a short trip for the game against the Eagles.

"Thankfully, from everything we've heard up to this point, we've been lucky that no one in the Royal family was harmed. Things could change, though. We'll find out more over the next couple of days,'' Uebelhardt said Saturday morning after the Highlanders' 34-12 loss to Chaminade on Friday night.

"We took the 118 Freeway yesterday and we were about to get off at the Topanga Canyon exit to make our way over to Chaminade [in West Hills], and then law enforcement officers waived us off,'' Uebelhardt added. "I had no idea, no clue, what was going on at the time, but apparently, we were right there.''

"There were helicopters, ambulances and fire trucks everywhere. Then I knew something was going on. My wife called me seconds later and told me about the crash. Needless to say, it didn't take long for all of my players to figure out what was going on. We were in shock, we still are.''

Football: Moorpark knew about train crash

September 13, 2008 | 10:06 am

As Moorpark took on host Sherman Oaks Notre Dame on Friday night, players were aware that a Metrolink train bound for Moorpark had crashed into a freight train in Chatsworth, according to Coach Tim Lins.

"We knew about it," Lins said. "We were seeing the [helicopters] flying over the top of us back and forth."

As of Saturday morning, Lins said he had heard that a relative of a Moorpark teacher had died in the accident.

Notre Dame defeated Moorpark, 17-14.

Football: Ex-San Fernando player dies

September 13, 2008 |  9:55 am

Dwight Chapman, who was the lead blocker for Anthony Davis on San Fernando's 1970 City runner-up team and served as a football coach off and on for the Tigers for more than 20 years, died on Friday after a short illness. He was 55.

Chapman, who taught health at San Fernando, retired from coaching after directing the freshman-sophomore team last season. He is survived by his daughter, January. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Football: Martinez overcomes first-game jitters in Centennial victory

September 13, 2008 |  1:05 am

He admitted he was a little nervous playing in his first game at the helm of the defending Inland Division champions, but in the end, quarterback Taylor Martinez proved he’s worthy of leading one of the state’s premier teams.

Martinez, who played in his first game with Centennial since transferring from Cajon in the off-season, completed 12 of 20 passes for 206 yards and three TDs, the last of which came on a 75-yard bomb in the fourth quarter, to push Corona Centennial to a 26-16 victory over host Temecula Chaparral on Friday night.

The Nebraska-bound quarterback was shaky in the first quarter, completing just one of his first five passes, but came alive in the second half when he connected on five consecutive passes. His 75-yard TD pass to a wide-open Zach Fazli in the fourth quarter sealed the victory.

“I felt better as the game went on,” Martinez said. “I wasn’t nervous at all after halftime.”

Chaparral sophomore quarterback Antoine Arnold completed eight of 14 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown and teammate Jonathan Diaz rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown. His 21-yard touchdown on fourth down in the fourth quarter pulled the Pumas to within three points.

However, it was not enough as Chaparral dropped its second consecutive game to the Huskies, having lost to them, 68-14, in last year’s division semifinals.

Be sure to click on the live blog to see how it all went down.

Also, I heard the Huskies had already practiced their victory dance. Check out this fascinating piece of Southland football culture:

Football: Cummings is the difference-maker in Crespi victory

September 12, 2008 | 10:24 pm

Kevin Cummings was seemingly all over the field during Crespi's 31-0 nonleague victory over Birmingham on Friday night. And there was nothing the Patriots could do to prevent the 6-foot-1 senior from making big play after big play, on both sides of the ball, no less.

He was responsible for the game's first momentum-changing sequence. In the second quarter, Cummings recovered a Trajuan Briggs fumble, thwarting a Birmingham drive. He then scored on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Bryan Bennett on the subsequent drive to give Crespi a 15-0 lead at halftime.

Any comeback hopes the Patriots might have had were spoiled by Cummings, who intercepted a Morey Croson pass to open the second half. Jeremiah McKibbins essentially put the game away minutes later with a 10-yard touchdown run for the Celts, ranked No. 5 in the Southland by The Times.

Cummings rarely came off the field. He even pitched in with a couple of tackles on special teams. Offensively, he provided some timely downfield blocks for McKibbins and finished with a pair of receptions for 62 yards.
