Football: Gardena Serra returns three kicks for TDs

September 6, 2008 |  1:51 pm

Here's a warning for future opponents of Gardena Serra: Don't kick the ball to Robert Woods. On Friday night, he returned a kickoff and punt for touchdowns in Serra's 56-21 victory over Silverado.

Carl Winston also returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Serra is loaded with college prospects and is going to be a fun team to watch with its offensive firepower.

Football: L.A. Jordan shows its summer effort was no fluke

September 6, 2008 |  1:46 pm

L.A. Jordan was one of the most impressive teams in seven-on-seven passing tournaments, and the Bulldogs showed in a 42-15 victory over Locke that they can also perform well in pads.

Eric Hunter caught a touchdown and ran for a touchdown, and freshman Raymond Ford III made an impressive debut, making an interception and catching a touchdown.

Next up for Jordan is a Friday night game against Esperanza at Gardena. Esperanza's defense was outstanding in a 12-9 victory over Corona Santiago.

"Something has to give," Jordan Coach Elijah Asante said, referring to his team's terrific offense and Esperanza's defense.

Asante also complimented fellow Eastern League member Garfield for its upset victory over Birmingham.

"It was great for the Eastern League," he said.

Basketball: San Juan Capistrano JSerra loses Walker

September 6, 2008 |  7:58 am

Once Tom Lewis resigned as coach at San Juan Capistrano JSerra, I figured there would be some kind of fallout, and stated as much in this blog about three weeks ago. Turns out, my hunch was right, things are a mess and there's nothing new Coach Grant Meyers can do about it.

It appears as if Demetrius Walker has transferred to St. Mary's in Phoenix, according to ArizonaPreps.com. The loss is a huge blow for the Eagles, given the fact that the 6-foot-4 senior, bound for USC, is considered by most scouts to be one of the top shooting guards in his class.

Only Southland standouts such as Rancho Verde's Michael Snaer and Santa Barbara's Roberto Nelson are ranked higher at their position than Walker. And make no mistake, replacing a player of that caliber won't be easy for San Juan Capistrano JSerra. In fact, it's next to impossible.

I heard rumors San Diego State-bound Alec Williams and junior guard Casey James could be considering a change of scenery as well. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to confirm anything yet. If, and when, some new information becomes available, Varsity Times Readers will be the first to know.

Football: Was it a conspiracy or spectacular talent?

September 6, 2008 |  7:04 am

UCLA football Coach Rick Neuheisel never materialized at the Los Osos-Bishop Amat game on Friday night, and now I'm thinking his so-called "planned visit" was all a conspiracy.

I figure the Los Osos mastermind (a.k.a Coach Tom Martinez) must have come up with the "Neuheisel visit" stunt shortly before kickoff on Friday. He knew the Lancers would make things interesting to the very end and he wanted to use the perfect carrot on a stick for QB Richard Brehaut.

Sure, I know Brehaut's talented, but his 23-yard touchdown pass to Arby Fields on fourth down and goal in the fourth quarter of the Grizzlies' 24-20 victory was simply amazing. The UCLA commit admitted to thinking Neuheisel was somewhere in the stadium when he made that pass, but he didn't speculate as to whether or not he was subconsciously trying to get on the good side of his future boss.

I guess we'll just have to conclude that Brehaut is definitely one of the best QBs in the Southland.

Check out this postgame interview to find out more. Some people told me Neuheisel did show up, but after the game, no one on the Los Osos coaching staff said they saw him. So, I was still under the Neuheisel-must-be-here-somewhere influence when I shot this video.

Football: Lakewood airs it out

September 5, 2008 | 11:57 pm

Lakewood had run aground at halftime of its intersectional game against Crenshaw.

The Lancers were struggling to find a rhythm on offense and had committed four late hits on defense to help the Cougars sustain drives that led to a pair of first-half touchdowns. Crenshaw took a 28-14 lead into intermission and unlike last season, Lakewood couldn't rely on Alex Fletcher to rally because the star running back had transferred to St. John Bosco.

So the Lancers turned to their passing game and junior quarterback Jesse Scroggins was happy to oblige, throwing for three second-half touchdowns to help Lakewood, ranked No. 21 in the Southland by The Times, pull out a 42-34 victory.

"He's really good in pressure situations," Lakewood Coach Thadd MacNeal said of Scroggins, who completed 22 of 33 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. "He's been doing this since the fourth grade in Pop Warner. He was made to be a quarterback and he thrives on these moments."

Football: No Scott, no problem for St. Bonaventure in opener

September 5, 2008 | 10:18 pm

There were many questions surrounding the program over at St. Bonaventure entering the season, perhaps the most important of which was: How were the Seraphs going to replace Darrell Scott, the team's star player from last year before he committed to Colorado?

The answer is simple -- use a running back by committee approach. Santa Margarita figured that out real quick Friday night but the Eagles failed each and every time they attempted to stop Devon Blackledge, Isaiah Burton, Patrick Hall and Nolan Rodarte, who combined to rush for 366 yards in a 35-14 season opening victory for the Seraphs, ranked No. 9 by The Times.

Blackledge was in rhythm early on. On his second carry from scrimmage, the junior busted threw the line of scrimmage, raced past the secondary and scored on a 73-yard touchdown run to give St. Bonaventure a 7-0 lead with 4:18 left in the first quarter. He finished with 149 yards.

Burton took over in the second quarter and scored on a 50-yard run to extend the lead to 13-0 with 6:11 left in the first half. The senior added an 87-yard touchdown to give St. Bonaventure a 28-7 lead in the third quarter to essentially demoralize Santa Margarita. All told, he had 167 yards on seven carries.

Los Osos beats Bishop Amat, 24-20

September 5, 2008 |  9:53 pm

UCLA-bound senior Richard Brehaut connected with Arby Fields on a fourth-down, 23-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter to rally the host Grizzlies to a victory over the Lancers in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

Brehaut completed nine of 19 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. However, he was just as impressive on the ground, rushing for 82 yards and a touchdown. Fields finished with 73 yards on 19 carries.

I'll have more on this one, soon. Check out the live blog for info, too.
