Football: Top players from the West prepare to face country's best

July 18, 2008 | 11:48 am

Received an interesting e-mail Friday morning regarding Football University's invite-only all-star camp that begins Saturday in Orlando, Fla. Apparently, this Top Gun Showcase brings together the nation’s top players for three days of training with former NFL players and coaches, and the Southland will be well represented at the event.

Cierre Wood is one of the headliners, and his billing as such is deserving considering the senior from Santa Clara, bound for Notre Dame, is regarded by most scouts as the top running back in the country. St. Bonaventure's Patrick Hall will also be in attendance, along with Cathedral's Randall Carroll and Inglewood's Shaquelle Evans.

Football: Grant gets Notre Dame QB

July 17, 2008 |  8:44 am

The movement of quarterbacks continues with senior Tommy Edwards of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame becoming the fourth QB from the San Fernando Valley to switch schools this summer.

He has landed at Van Nuys Grant, where he has applied for a hardship waiver from the City Section. It will be up to Commissioner Barbara Fiege to decide whether to grant it. If not, he'll be forced to change residences to gain eligibility.

Edwards started Notre Dame's Pac-5 playoff opener last season in place of the injured Dayne Crist. He was beaten out for the starting QB spot this summer by Ryan Kasdorf.

Football: Oaks Christian concerned about media frenzy

July 17, 2008 |  7:08 am

After TV's "Access Hollywood" did a story on Oaks Christian's celebrity football players, with "Entertainment Tonight" to follow, Oaks Christian officials have decided to take action "to protect the privacy" of its athletes.

Tom Konjoyan, the director of development, said "nontraditional sports media" will not be allowed access to practices and students.

"We can't jeopardize the security of the students," he said.

There were parental complaints after a front page story in The Times last week focused on Oaks Christian's Nick Montana, Trevor Gretzky and Trey Smith -- sons of celebrity parents -- and the likely interest of paparazzi.

In a sign of what's to come, Coach Bill Redell handed me a visitor's pass Wednesday night to walk the sideline of a mere summer passing tournament.

"We're trying to make sure high school kids can be high school kids," Konjoyan said.
