Baseball: Hart's Bauer picks UCLA, will graduate early

June 14, 2008 |  7:58 pm

Bauer Newhall Hart junior right-hander Trevor Bauer, who was 12-0 this season, has committed to UCLA and intends to graduate in December and join the Bruins in January.

Bauer said Saturday he wanted to finalize his decision before he leaves Monday for North Carolina to play in a tournament.

If he would have stayed for his senior season, he would have been considered a potential high draft choice. He has been throwing fastballs in the low 90s mph.

"I'm excited to be playing for UCLA," he said.

Bauer's arrival will give the Bruins potentially a group of top pitchers with last names starting in B _ Charles Brewer, Gavin Brooks and Bauer.

UCLA won out over Stanford for Bauer, who's a top student and wants to be an engineer.

Football: Mater Dei wins Dana Hills passing tournament

June 14, 2008 |  2:44 pm

So much for all that talk about Mater Dei lacking receivers as targets for All-American quarterback Matt Barkley.

They were good enough Saturday to help the Monarchs defeat Los Alamitos, 28-26, in the championship game of the seven-on-seven Dana Hills passing tournament.

Derek Campbell, Andrew Roth and Sean Sierra were among the new receivers making contributions. Los Alamitos defeated Mater Dei, 27-26, earlier in the day.

Football: Oaks Christian gets a sixth quarterback candidate

June 13, 2008 |  1:03 pm

How many quarterbacks does it take to replace Christopher Potter of Oaks Christian?

Well, the Lions had five quarterbacks competing for the starting job during the spring, and a sixth, Chaminade transfer Nick Isham, arrived this week to join the competition.

Isham is one of three sophomores who transferred to Oaks Christian from Chaminade, and all will be eligible immediately under the new Southern Section transfer rules that allow a one-time transfer before a student's sophomore year.

It's Friday Night Football in June

June 13, 2008 | 10:36 am

Until now, about the only cure for the Friday Night Light blues has been to watch "Friday Night Lights" on DVD (the TV show, not the movie).

Good thing the 29th annual Hall of Fame game is coming up. The classic affair between East SGV vs. West SGV (with some kids from the Claremont and Bell Gardens area included) is providing the Friday Night fix you need on June 27 at 7 p.m. at Basset High.

Some of the players expected to take part are Oregon State-bound defensive back Kevan Walker of Arcadia, Northern Colorado-bound quarterback Matt Baca of Ayala, Utah State-bound running back Chris Harris of Duarte, defensive back/running back Kanaan Snowden of Charter Oak and running back Willie Youngblood of Muir.

Ray Hernandez of La Puente is the coach for the East, and Erick Escamilla of South El Monte is the coach for the West.

Girls' basketball: Full Speed ahead for USA U18 team

June 13, 2008 |  1:04 am

Nikki Speed, who helped her team win four Southern Section titles while at Marlborough, has been named to the USA Basketball U18 National team.

Speed was one of 12 players selected from among 35 who participated in the three-day tryout.

Speed, a guard who will attend Rutgers in the fall, was the only Southland player chosen. In fact, she is one of only three players who played west of Tulsa, Okla. The others were Ashley Corral of Vancouver (Wash.) Prairie and Joslyn Tinkle of Missoula (Mont.) Big Sky. Corral, by the way, will attend USC.

Among those who didn't make the squad were Jasmine Dixon, who was The Times' and the state player of the year, and junior Monique Oliver of Long Beach Poly.

Boys' volleyball: Valencia gets another 'unofficial' honor

June 12, 2008 |  9:16 pm

I think it's safe to say that if there were such a thing as a national boys' volleyball champion, Valencia would be it.

Just weeks after the Southern Section-Toyota Division II champions were named the unofficial national champions by StudentSportsVolleyball.com, the Vikings were pegged as the No. 1 team in the nation by Rivals and CalHiSports.com in its postseason rankings.

Valencia (36-2), which has seven players moving on to Division I college programs, won its fourth division title in six years last month and posted a 94-11 game record. UCLA-bound Jamey Ker, the Division II Player of the Year, led the way with 309 kills.

Spectacularly, it is the second unofficial national championship Valencia has earned in the last two years. The Valencia softball team, which repeated as Division I champions this year, was declared as the best team in the nation by Rivals.com in 2007.
