Boys' tennis: Thousand Oaks' Lin and Giron talk about their win

May 24, 2008 |  9:37 pm

One look at Marcos Giron, 14, and Denis Lin, 16, and you have to ask yourself, how old are they? Old enough, apparently.

Giron, a freshman, and Lin, a junior, the youngest tandem at the Southern Section-Toyota individual championships, became the first doubles champions from Thousand Oaks on Saturday at the Seal Beach Tennis Center. Here's an interview with the two after they beat top-seeded Tyler Bowman and Jon Kazarian of Peninsula, 6-4, 6-3, in the finals.

Boys' volleyball: Mira Costa comes back to win Division I title

May 24, 2008 |  9:35 pm

Mira Costa just completed an amazing comeback, winning Game 5 of the Southern Section-Toyota Division I boys' volleyball championship, 15-9, in the decisive fifth game Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Mira Costa won the match, 18-25, 27-29, 25-20, 25-19, 15-9.

With its victory, Mira Costa beat the division's top-seeded team and the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, according to Student Sports and Rivals.com. Mira Costa was ranked No. 9.

Newport Harbor, which won the first two games, had no answer for Steven Mochalski and junior Ian Satterfield in the latter stages of the match, but after a long rally on match point, it was Mira Costa's Dylan Kordic who finally put the game away.

Mira Costa had led most of the fifth game after successive kills by Satterfield, a 6-foot-5 opposite, gave his team a 4-2 lead.

Boys' volleyball: Mira Costa draws even, it's do-or-die for Division I title

May 24, 2008 |  9:14 pm

Mira Costa has won back-to-back games and pulled even with top-seeded Newport Harbor at two games apiece in the Southern Section-Toyota Division I championship Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Mustangs, ranked No. 9 in the nation, won Game 4, 25-19.

Newport Harbor, ranked No. 1 in the nation, has now lost more games in this match -- two -- than it had in the entire playoffs.

Now, it's do-or-die: First team to 15 points -- and win by two points -- is champion.

Ian Satterfield and Steven Mochalski breathed life into Mira Costa's championship hopes, helping the Mustangs emerge with a 25-20 victory in Game 3 Saturday in the Southern Section-Toyota Division I championships at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Newport Harbor still leads, 2-1, in this best-of-five match. It held a 15-14 lead before Satterfield, Mochalski and Dylan Kordic did the bulk of the damage to close it out. Mira Costa led, 21-19, when it scored the next three points, and won when Kyle Caldwell's serve went wide.

Boys' volleyball: Newport Harbor poised for a Division I sweep

May 24, 2008 |  8:28 pm

In the Southern Section-Toyota Division I championship, top-seeded Newport Harbor has taken a huge two-game advantage over second-seeded Mira Costa Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Newport Harbor took Game 1 by a score of 28-25 behind the play of Mark Liebermann, a 6-foot-5 outside hitter headed to UC Santa Barbara.

The second game was headed Mira Costa's way as it made a four-point run mid-match behind the service of Stanford-bound Dylan Kordic to take an 18-15 lead. It even led, 23-20, but Newport Harbor, on the verge of defeat three times, rallied to pull out a 29-27 victory behind Max Volz and Tucker Peleuses.

Game 2 was well-fought and pretty tough, but Valencia prevailed, 32-30, to go up two games to none in the Southern Section-Toyota Division II final at Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday.

It will be interesting to see how Santa Barbara comes back with no margin for error in this best-of-five match. The Dons had an 8-4 lead in Game 2, and were at game point five times; Valencia closed it out on its third game point.

Boys' volleyball: Quartz Hill wins it for the desert

May 24, 2008 |  4:52 pm

The drought in the desert is over.

Quartz Hill swept Loara in the Southern Section-Toyota Division III finals today and became the first team from the Antelope Valley to win the crown. “We’re not just good for the desert,” said Coach Justin Harris. “We’re good for Southern California.”

No, not good -- but great.

The Rebels (26-0) won all 26 of their matches in straight games. They lost only four games this season -- all of them at the Dos Pueblos tournament in March.

“It’s unexplainable what we did. It’s unbelievable,” said Quartz Hill’s Hunter Horn. “It’s such a high standard that we've created here.”

Baseball: Redlands East Valley wins Division II quarterfinal

May 24, 2008 |  4:09 pm

Redlands East Valley got a scare from Oxnard in Saturday's Southern Section-Toyota Division II quarterfinal game in Ventura County. But the top-seeded Wildcats were resilient and prevailed, 2-1, to advance to Tuesday's semifinal against Palos Verdes.

Starter Taylor Chatwood was on top of his game, giving up five hits in five innings of work for Redlands East Valley. Jeremy Perez came on in relief in the sixth inning with the score tied. Redlands East Valley scored in the bottom of the sixth and Perez earned his fourth victory of the season.

"Their pitching was pretty tough,'' Oxnard Coach Alfred Tarazon said. "We had some opportunities but couldn't make the most of them. In a game like this, against a good team like that, there's no room for error. They were the better team today.''
