Track and field: Dominguez dons crown as 1,600 relay record-holder

May 17, 2008 | 11:39 pm

The boys' 1,600 relay was all about the Dominguez foursome of Kivon Grant, Manoah Wesson, Leon Dillihunt and Aaron Hestor. They combined to break the Division I record set by Hawthorne in 1985. Dominguez ran it in 3 minutes 11.87 seconds, eclipsing Hawthorne's 3:12.23.

In-depth coverage of the Dons' record-setting performance can be found in Dan Arrit's account. It was also the state's fastest time, beating the mark of 3:12.13.

Although Dominguez beat Long Beach Poly in a good race, there was an outstanding race in Division III as well. Crespi made a last-lap pass for the lead and hung on -- barely -- to nip Orange Lutheran. Crespi stopped the clock at 3:15.91, to Lutheran's 3:16.07. Servite was there at the end too, at 3:17.28, and all three qualified for the Masters Meet on Friday at Cerritos College.

Roosevelt won in Division II, and Santa Ynez took the Division IV title with a time of 3:24.67.

Track and field: Masters meet or baseball playoffs for Torres?

May 17, 2008 | 11:26 pm

Crescenta Valley's Zack Torres qualified for Friday's Masters meet in Cerritos with a time of 9:21.60 in the Southern Section-Toyota Division I boys' 3,200 meters championships. That's a good thing, except he is the starting second baseman on the Falcons' baseball team, which will play at El Toro on Tuesday.

If Crescenta Valley moves on in the playoffs, it will play on Friday, the same day as the Masters, though they take place in the evening at Cerritos College. Torres, also the son of the team's head coach, Phil Torres, will have a decision to make if it gets to that point.

Jeremy Acosta of Highland was the boys' 3,200 Division I champion, Luis Dorantes of Whittier won Division II, Anthony Solis of Barstow won Division III and Nick Osbourne of Victor Valley Christian won Division IV with a time of 9:37.69 that did not qualify him for the Masters meet.

One of Poly's primary rivals failed to advance. Track and field: Dencer is the class of the field in the girls' 800

May 17, 2008 | 10:01 pm

Dencer_2 Camilla Dencer, pictured, of West Valley Christian already owned the fastest time in the state in the girls' 800. She didn't top her best mark on Saturday at the Southern Section-Toyota Championships at Mt. SAC, but to put her performance in perspective, her winning time of 2:10.5 matched the state's second-best mark set previously by the sensational Christine Babcock of Woodbridge.

Dencer beat Tara Blanchard of La Reina by three seconds to win the Division IV title.

Dencer set the state standard with a 2:09.61 at the Mt. SAC Invitational.

Dencer, Ne'Ausha Logan of Warren in Division I and Meghan Foley of Edison in Division II were the only runners to crack the 2:13 barrier.

Boys' volleyball: Izuchukwu rises to the occasion for Palisades

May 17, 2008 |  9:59 pm

It's no surprise that with the City Championship on the line in the fifth game Saturday night, Palisades setter Scott Vegas looked for Kene Izuchukwu. And Izuchukwu delivered every time.

The Dolphins' sophomore hitter was 19 for 19 on his kill attempts in Palisades' five-game triumph over El Camino Real -- a stat so staggering that Palisades Coach Chris Forrest had to go over the scoresheet twice to verify its accuracy.

"That's pretty incredible in a championship game," Forrest said. "And we needed every one of those points he got us."
