Los Alamitos has a sophomore, Alex Merrill, who turned in a terrific swimming performance on  Friday at the Klaus Barth Invitational.

Merrill won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races at Belmont Plaza.

To read more about the event and Merrill's performance, take a look at Dan Albano's account.

Track and field: Big day out in Santa Barbara

March 22, 2008 | 11:22 pm

22578644_2 If you were lucky enough to spend Saturday perusing the streets of downtown Santa Barbara, you may have caught a glimpse of one of the region's biggest meets going on at La Playa Stadium on the seaside campus of Santa Barbara City College.

The 21st annual Easter Relays once again took place on its ever-changing spot on the calendar and there were plenty of impressive performances from some of the best athletes in the San Fernando Valley/North region.

Be sure to check here for complete results.

Also, here are the results from the Percy Knox Invitational at College of the Canyons.

Baseball: Jupiter's Armstrong wins home run derby at Natl. Classic

March 22, 2008 |  5:22 pm

Jack_armstrong_autograph The big winner of today's home-run derby on the opening day of the National Classic was a big kid with a name familiar to Cincinnati Reds fans.

Jack Armstrong, a 6-foot-7, 200-pound right-hander from Jupiter (Fla.), clubbed five over the fence in the four-man final to take first place at El Dorado High in Placentia.

Armstrong, who signed with Vanderbilt, is the son of former Major League pitcher Jack Armstrong, who helped the Reds win the 1990 World Series but had to retire at the age of 27 because of a rotator cuff injury.

Apparently, the younger Armstrong has quite a throwing arm as well.

Finishing tied for second with four home runs each were Derek Collins of Esperanza and Matt Davidson of Yucaipa.

Baseball: Four reach final of home run derby at Natl. Classic

March 22, 2008 |  5:01 pm

Hero Derek Collins of Esperanza, Kyle Beverly of Salt Lake City Cottonwood, Jack Armstrong of Jupiter (Fla.) and my pre-home run derby pick, Matt Davidson of Yucaipa, reached the four-man final at the National Classic baseball tournament at El Dorado High.

Each clubbed six home runs (I had Davidson with five in the first round, but I must've missed one).

Baseball: Davidson, Gilmartin go deep early, often in HR derby

March 22, 2008 |  4:22 pm

Ball__cartoon_3 Sean Gilmartin of Crespi and Matt Davidson of Yucaipa were the local standouts in the first round of the home-run derby Saturday at the National Classic baseball tournament.

Davidson, a junior, smacked four home runs during the first round, which consisted of seven outs. That was three more than the two hitters from Orange Lutheran combined for. Carlos Lopez of Crespi then hit one home run, and Gilmartin, his teammate, jacked five deep flies from the left side of the plate.

Baseball: Even the Cube would give El Rancho 'proper respect'

March 22, 2008 |  3:07 pm

Icecube_4Gave these guys some props about a week ago. But I'm feeling pretty generous, so I'm giving them some more props. Why? They keep winning (and dominating).

El Rancho's record is up to 8-0 and 3-0 in the Del Rio League. The Dons' latest beatdown: a 10-2 whupping of Pioneer on Friday, when Michael Espinoza threw a three-hitter and Ernie Aguilera and Aaron Flores each knocked in a pair. Why am I hyping the Dons so much-- well, at this point last season, they were underwhelming at 4-4.

Track: Birmingham's Jimenez gets early lesson at Trojan Invitational

March 22, 2008 |  2:17 pm

Scared_boy_2 Birmingham junior Waldo Jimenez, the anchor man of the Patriots' sprint medley relay team, found himself all alone with 200 meters left before the finish line.

And it terrified him.

So Pats sprint coach Kertice Carruth wasn't too upset when Jimenez was eventually overtaken by Taft senior Adrian Anderson with 120 meters to go at the Trojan Invitational at USC.

"He came back to me and said 'Coach I was out there by myself and was scared to death,'" Carruth said with a chuckle. "This was a good lesson for him. It's good he got it now instead of the [City] finals."

Baseball: National Classic home-run derby set for this afternoon

March 22, 2008 |  1:26 pm

Dingers Everyone appreciates a long home run. I like 'em in bunches.

That's why I'm grabbing my two little boys and heading over to El Dorado High this afternoon for the annual home-run derby that kicks off the National Classic baseball tournament. The games are scheduled to begin Monday at four locations in Orange County.

I don't know a whole lot about the out-of-towners, but I expect Yucaipa junior Matt Davidson to put on a show. Here's a little write-up on Davidson from a couple years ago.

Any other predictions? Check back for some updates.

Track: Washington blisters boys' 4x100m relay at Trojan Invitational

March 22, 2008 | 10:53 am

George_washington_1782_painting_2 Laron Taylor's strong second leg run gave Washington the separation it needed to win the boys' 4x100m relay at the Trojan Invitational at USC.

The Generals won the prep relay in 42.33 seconds, followed by Dorsey in 42.67 and Crenshaw in 42.94.

Washington Coach Small was more than satisfied with the result. "We had a bad hand-off on the third leg and still ran a 42," he said. "That tells me we can run 41 by the time of City [finals]."

Track: At least Taft's Drew has a good excuse for his absence

March 22, 2008 | 10:18 am

Larrydrew The Taft boys' 4x100m relay team is getting ready to race in the Trojan Invitational without one of its key runners -- Larry Drew Jr.

But Drew has an excused absence. He is traveling to the McDonald's All-America high school basketball game in Milwaukee on Wednesday.
