Football: Get ready for some muddy City Section games

With rain expected to come down today, there’s going to be some muddy fields for Wednesday’s City Section quarterfinal games, and one team that should benefit most is San Fernando, which plays at Taft.

The Tigers have developed players besides quarterback Rashaad Reynolds, and one of the best is running back Daniel Lopez, who rushed for 217 yards against Dorsey and 275 yards against Monroe in his last two games. Taft’s field is mostly dirt, and with mud likely, Lopez could be tough to stop.

And San Fernando is ready for mud. ‘Sometimes our sprinklers go off, and it’s wet and muddy,’ Tigers Coach Tom Hernandez said.

Taft, however, could struggle in the mud because its offense is built around speed instead of power. Of the other games, only Crenshaw-Jordan players don’t have to worry about mud. Crenshaw has an all-weather surface.
