Rialto might want to hold a midweek scrimmage against an intramural football team from UC Irvine before opening Citrus Belt League play Oct. 3 at home against Miller. The Anteaters could help rid Rialto’s football and baseball fields of an infestation of fire ants that earlier this week prompted the cancellation of a freshman football game and the relocation of practices, according to Associated Press.

‘They’re from South America,’ Syeda Jafri, spokeswoman for the Rialto Unified School District, told AP. ‘How they got here, we have no idea.’

Exterminators are expected to rid the field of the venomous pests by Friday, meaning next week’s game should proceed as scheduled.
