When it comes to the Southland’s most recognizable name among guards in the 2010 recruiting class, UCLA-bound Kendall Williams from Los Osos ranks at the top of the list. Mater Dei’s Gary Franklin and Colony’s Tyler Lamb are not far behind and both did a good job of narrowing the gap over the past couple of months.

Interestingly enough, most observers aren’t familiar with Jordin Mayes. However, the 6-foot-1 junior from Westchester did his best to open the eyes of Division I scouts from all over the country during the summer evaluation period and could end up being mentioned as one of the best of the bunch before all is said and done.

‘Potential is a scary word, but Jordin has plenty of it,’’ Westchester Coach Ed Azzam said. ‘He has all the tools, all the skills to play at the next level. I have heard nothing but good things about him from scouts, but a Division I scholarship is not a forgone conclusion. He must continue improving and we know he’s capable of doing it.’’

Several Pac-10 Conference programs have been in contact with Mayes recently, most notably Arizona and UCLA. It’s worth noting that Kansas and UNLV are in the mix as well, although he hasn’t received an offer from any of the aforementioned schools -- at least not yet. My guess is, things will change sooner rather than later.
