Basketball: Orange Lutheran could have a keeper in York

August 18, 2008 |  7:37 pm

Remember this blog from back in early July, the one about how I had good intentions of getting out of the house at some point this summer to catch Gabe York from Orange Lutheran in action? Well, mission accomplished.

Had the chance to see the freshman at the Slam Jam Sophomore Showcase on Sunday out in the Valley at Taft, and I must say, the kid was impressive. In fact, he was fearless at times and didn't look anything like a rookie.

"I don't get intimidated. I like a challenge, that's the only way to improve,'' York said. "When things are tough, that is when I play my best and give 110 percent. You cannot be scared, there's no reason to be. We're all playing the same game.''

It will be interesting to see how the 6-foot-2, 165-pound guard does once the season rolls around in late December, considering the Lancers play in the highly competitive Trinity League, along with Mater Dei and Santa Margarita.

The 15-year-old will be challenged early and often, that much is certain. And while I hate to put any added pressure on him given his lack of experience, I'm still willing to bet that York opens plenty of eyes in his first year at the varsity level.
