Boys' golf: Sophomore leads Sunny Hills to CIF state title
Sunny Hills sophomore Jeff Kang, on the right in the picture, lived up his ranking as one of the best in the nation by winning the CIF state championship tournament Tuesday at the Santa Maria Country Club.
Kang, 16, ranked 105 in the nation by the American Junior Golf Assn., finished with a two-under-par 70 to win the individual title. His score helped Sunny Hills edge runner-up Santa Barbara, 379 to 383, to win the team title.
Kang had somewhat underperform in the Southern Section-Toyota team finals and the CIF/SCGA Southern California Regional by finishing with over-par scores of 75 in each tournament.
But not today. Today, he turned in the lowest score.

Im confused about something. After reading the golf article, Santa Barbara said they played in the wind the last 14 holes or so, while Sunny Hills said they avoided it all day. I know it wasn't a shotgun, but with only 48 players there, there should not have been that much of a difference. Thats only 12 or 16 groups depending how you work things (4somes or 3somes) They were all still out on the course at the same time! How could there be that much of a difference? Someone please explain. Thanks

James,
the format was for this tournament was more pro-style. The first group tee'd off at 7:30 a.m. and the last group didn't tee off until almost three hours later at 9:45 a.m.
Players from Sunny Hills were in the first six group to tee off while players from Santa Barbara where in the last six.
Hope that helps you understand.
