Baseball: Birmingham pitcher signs with Florida Marlins

June 22, 2008 | 12:02 pm

Olmos All-City left-hander Edgar Olmos of Birmingham has signed with the Florida Marlins. He was a third-round draft choice and received a bonus package of close to $500,000 to turn down a scholarship to Arizona.

"I'm excited," said Olmos, who will leave Wednesday for Jupiter, Fla.

The 6-foot-4 Olmos is the son of two parents who came to America from Mexico with little education but through hard work and dedication have raised a family.

Olmos was one of the top pitchers in the West Valley League and has the potential for even more progress once he gains additional weight and strength.
