Wrestling: Meredith also affected by Arizona State's cutbacks

May 16, 2008 |  1:58 pm

I wrote earlier this week about how Redlands swimmer Joey Hale was affected by the decision of the Arizona State athletic department to eliminate men's swimming, tennis and wrestling. Hale, who set a Southern Section-Toyota Division I meet record in the boys' 50-yard freestyle last week, had signed with the Sun Devils.

He's not the only Inland Empire athlete affected by the decision.

Jake Meredith of Temecula Valley, runner-up in the 171-pound division at the state wrestling championships in March, also received the bad news earlier this week. According to this report, he can still attend Arizona State on scholarship, but he'd have to give up the sport, or hope it gets reinstated down the line.

Former Chaparral wrestler Chris Drouin was a redshirt freshman on the Sun Devil wrestling team and former swimmer Sean Boyle was a junior at Arizona State. No word on their fate at this time.
