Volleyball: How long has it been since Torrance last wore a crown?

May 3, 2008 |  5:07 pm

Let's play a quick game of "Guess the Year." Here are your three clues ...

1. The winter Olympics were held in Calgary.

2. Some guy named Kirk Gibson hit a pretty big World Series home run for the Dodgers.

3. Torrance boys' volleyball won its last league title before winning one this week.

The answer -- it was 1988.

A couple of days ago, Torrance (17-9, 6-2) beat defending Pioneer League champion North Torrance to win its first league title in 20 years.

Here's what Torrance's Kory Watkins told the Daily Breeze: "It's a crazy feeling being part of this. Being on the team that got the first league title for Torrance is just crazy."

Crazy, indeed. Especially after 20 years.
