Volleyball: Hazing incident results in Alemany disciplinary action

April 1, 2008 |  3:34 pm

An off-campus hazing incident involving members of Alemany's boys' volleyball team has resulted in 11 students and one adult being disciplined, according to Tod Tamberg, spokesman for the Los Angeles Archdiocese.

Long-time boys' volleyball Coach Jamie Quaglino has resigned his position but remains a teacher at the school.

A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department said Tuesday a patrol car was called to the school to investigate the incident about two weeks ago, and "it was deemed noncriminal."

"Due to the fact that the students are juveniles, and school disciplinary proceedings are confidential, archdiocesan and school personnel are prevented from discussing the matter in further detail," Tamberg wrote in an e-mail. "The matter was dealt with swiftly, and appropriate action was taken. The matter is considered closed."

This sounds just like the Mahoney cover up.

This is disgusting. These boys pre-meditated this act. THEN the school failed to inform all of the parents involved, choosing to "discipline" on their own. If this had been a female victim, would they have been so lenient? For a school which in the past expelled a student for getting married, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around what Catholic principles they are sticking to. No wonder enrollment is down to a record low.

Jay, you are all over the web on this issue. Based on other blogs, it seems you or your "administrator" relative at Alemany have have it out for the principal. LA Times story with LAPD quoted seems pretty straight forward. The players were wrong and need to be disciplined. If it is really serious, the victim should bring charges. That would be expected. But the attack on the school and it's enrollment makes it seem you have a personal axe to grind.

It was rape no matter how you look at it. If this were a girl it would be rape. The boy is probably begging his parents not to press charges. If what I am hearing is true, the SB police should press rape charges. These boys brought a dildo to SB for a reason. Maybe they have homosexual tendancies... THis poor boy. IF what I am hearing about the coach taking the boy to the hospital because he was having a panic attack and told him not to say anything about the rape, then the coach should be charged as well. And why isn't he fired??

"parent" - You must be confusing me with another commenter somewhere. I haven't been on any other blogs regarding this and have no adminstrative ties to the school. I'm just an alumnus who put out my opinion upon finding out about this - since it's the latest in a long line of cover-ups. It's pretty clear this was pre-meditated and that there was at least an attempt at assault. That the school played games with this is gross and should have been looked into further.
