Mater Dei offensive line coach arrested on charges of wire fraud

March 18, 2008 |  7:33 pm

Coach_rdiehlReed Kyle Diehl, right, an offensive line coach for Mater Dei and former player with the Tennessee Titans football team, was arrested Tuesday for allegedly defrauding a housing developer of $2.5 million by falsely promising to secure funding for a construction project in Mexico.

Diehl, 29, of Cota de Caza, was arrested by FBI agents at his home on federal charges of wire fraud in connection with the alleged offer to secure a line of credit for the unnamed out-of-state developer. According to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, Diehl persuaded the victim to deposit $2.5 million to be used as collateral for the promised line of credit.

Instead, the complaint charges, the former NFL player used the money to pay others who had invested their money with him. No line of credit was ever obtained.

He was released Tuesday on $75,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is set for April 7 and arraignment April 14. He could receive up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted.

Diehl, 29, was a member of the Mater Dei team when it was named national champion in 1994. He coached the offensive line for five seasons at Tesoro while that school won two Southern Section titles before returning to his alma mater for the 2007 season. He was one of two offensive line coaches who oversaw, among others, one of the most outstanding linemen in the nation, Khaled Holmes.
