I’m always spotting this name -- Brian Scilacci. Maybe its for his 10 kills a game, maybe for his 20, maybe for more. Whatever it is, the kid is one of the main pistons in the finely tuned volleyball engine that is the Loyola Cubs, ranked No. 2 in the Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll.

The Cubs (10-4) leveled Long Beach Wilson Wednesday in three games, and, of course, Scilacci chipped in his usual 20 kills. Matt Mirick didn’t do too badly tonight either with 41 assists. Jump back to last week and Scilacci was the Loyola kill-leader with 11, when the Cubbies handed vaunted Mira Costa its first loss of the season.

Scilacci, a 6-foot-3 senior, will head to UCLA and join his brother, James, on the Bruins’ volleyball squad.
