Boys' golf: Arroyo Valley administrators pull plug on season

March 19, 2008 | 10:27 am

ImagesSo, the Arroyo Valley boys' golf program has disbanded, even though there was really nothing to disband. Because of a lack of interest in the sport, and the lack of interest in schoolwork by the few who were interested in playing golf, school administrators decided to cancel the season.

Really, I'm not surprised. In fact, I'm just waiting for a school to cancel its football season, or its wrestling program, or track and field. Most young people would rather sit on the sofa after school and entertain themselves with a bag of chips and their Xbox or Wii. Most of the time, their folks aren't around to suggest anything different.

You'll certainly find fewer and fewer teenagers willing to put in the time, energy and effort (OK, and a little money) to hit a golf ball down a fairway, then actually walk after it. Why should they? They can get pretty much the same thrill playing Real World Golf and stay within 15 feet of the pantry.

Today, it's the boys' golf program at Arroyo Valley, but tomorrow, it could easily be the entire San Andreas League -- or any other -- football season.
