Girls’ soccer: Wish I could see Quartz Hill beat Highland

I had a gut feeling Quartz Hill would beat Highland on Friday, but I didn’t have the guts to call it out, even though I had the desire to be on the sidelines.

So believe me, I’m not too surprised Quartz Hill vaporized the Bulldogs’ 40-game league winning streak with a 1-0 victory over the perennial Golden League champions. According to the Daily News, Lauren Misklevitz netted the game-winner just minutes before a hundred or so Rebel-rousers stormed Highland’s field to celebrate the blue and gold’s come-from-behind triumph.

Hey, I can’t blame the Quartz Hill faithful for wanting to run, skip and jump a little -- after all, they haven’t celebrated a victory over their fellow west-side rival in more than three years.

But I’m sure the players aren’t living it up too much. They know the burgundy-cleated crew are going to be tougher the second time around because leading scorer Samantha Johnson (18 goals, 44 points) was a no-show on Friday. The USC-bound junior was in Arizona for an Olympic Development Program tournament.

Hopefully, she won’t be the only person to see Quartz Hill for the first time this season on Feb 7. I’m hoping to make it out to Avenue L and 60th Street West for Round 2 of this classic rivalry, but, like last night’s contest, it looks like it falls once again on a busy night.

I guess that sort of thing is going to keep happening until the Southern Section allows me to pre-approve every team’s schedule. Wait a minute, I don’t want to do that -- that sounds like a nightmare!
