Encino Crespi and Los Angeles Loyola are engaging in an entertaining Mission League boys’ basketball game Monday night, with Loyola leading, 36-31, at halftime.

Let’s just say it’s a night for the guards to let the ball fly. Crespi junior Patrick Booth, who looks like a ringer for Jeff Spicoli from ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’ with his long blond hair, has connected on five three-point baskets and scored 17 points in the first half.

Loyola sophomore guard Miles Cartwright got hot at the end of the second quarter, making two three-pointers and contributing 10 points in the quarter.

Crespi is playing without sophomore guard Blake Stanton, who had to sit out for disciplinary reasons.

There are three top teams in the Mission League: Harvard-Westlake, Crespi and Loyola. Any time those teams meet, it’s anyone’s guess who’s going to come out on top.

At least Loyola finally figured out at the end of the first half to start guarding Booth. Hollis Thompson took on the assignment. Loyola’s Carl Hoffman, a 6-foot-9 junior, was the surprise player in the first half with 13 points.
