Remembering Covina Coach ‘Doc’ Sooter

Former Covina boys’ basketball Coach ‘Doc’ Sooter died Nov. 20 of cancer in his house in San Luis Obispo. He was 87.

Born Windorf McClellan Sooter on March 10, 1920 in Tuscumbia, Mo., Sooter is survived by his second wife, Dorothy, sons Larry and Steve, daughter Julie, two stepsons, a stepdaughter and 16 grandchildren.

Sooter coached from 1947 to 1975 and compiled a record of 656-177. He is a member of both the Northeast Missouri State Hall of Fame and Covina High School Hall of Fame.

A memorial is set for 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of San Luis Obispo, located on 2075 Johnson Ave.

I lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made ito LifeLine CPC, 1447 Grand Avenue, Grover Beach, CA 93433.
