San Dimas defeated Bonita in football on Friday night for only the second time in 12 years. While students celebrated on the field, the Smudge Pot, the trophy awareded the victor in this annual rivalry, exchanged hands in the middle of the field. It was then taken to the Saints’ sideline where the crowd cheered in appreciation. The trophy had a quick photo session with the cheerleaders and then off it went to the players, who carried it around the stadium as they continued to celebrate.

This will be a night many San Dimas players, fans, coaches, teachers, parents, custodians, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, etc., will never forget.

Running back Nico Barbone probably summed it up best: ‘That’s something you will always remember. Being on the field and having everyone come out. Beating your rival. I’ll remember that forever.’

It’s what high school football is all about. There were no scouts, no national TV cameras, but there was a plenty of school spirit and a terrific atmosphere.

You just wish every Friday night was Smudge Pot night. Relive the celebration, and the chaos, through the photos above.
