L.A. Auto Show: Price announced on new BMW diesels

autos cars Los Angeles Times BMW 3 Series X5 diesel 50-state-legal Blue Performance ammonia sedan SUV The good people at BMW have just announced prices for the 335d sedan and the X5 xDrive 35d SUV. Both vehicles are making their North American debuts at the L.A. Auto Show this week. And that little lower-case d signifies something important. Diesel power.

A twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight six engine is found in the engine bays of both cars, and it uses a system BMW calls Blue Performance Diesel. When it comes to reducing particulates and nitrous oxides, blue trumps green. It’s all to do with passing the exhaust through an ammonia-rich solution. The upshot is that this engine is legal in all 50 states, churning out 265 horsepower and an extremely healthy 425 pound-feet of torque.

The 335d consumes 36 mpg on the highway and has a range of 580 miles.BMW Clean Diesel X5 xDrive 35d The 335d sedan starts at $44,725 and the X5 xDrive 35d goes for $52,025 and up. However, both are eligible for an Alternative Motor Vehicle income tax credit; up to $900 for the 335d and $1,550 for this X5 model. The AAA of Southern California gives today’s (Nov. 20) average price of a gallon of diesel as $2.91.
