Your morning adorable: Oklahoma dog Wall-e survives euthanization

Wall-e

Wall-e, an adorable Oklahoman puppy, is showing the world that cats aren't the only animals with more than one life.

The 3-month-old puppy was euthanized with five brothers and sisters and tossed into a waste bin behind a shelter, only to be discovered the next morning "as healthy as he could be" by an animal control officer.

Wall-e-puppy Wall-e and his brethren, all apparently very sick, had been left at the shelter in Sulphur, Okla. But because of overcrowding and their condition, the puppies were put down. When Wall-e was found "prancing" the next day he was eventually handed over to a veterinary technician who put the story of the black-and-white terrier mix on the adoption website PetFinder.com.

Where to begin with this miracle - pup. .... On Friday 2/18 him and about 5 of his siblings where left infront of Animal Control- due to over crowding and their scrawny appearance they were euthanized that night. ... Wall-e was euthanized twice- once in the arm and then in the heart.... he was believed dead and disposed of in the dumpster "with the rest"..... On Saturday morning (2/19) the animal control officer found him very much alive and hungry...... a young girl gave him the name of Wall-e based on the animated movie since Wall-e was also a survivor/ last of his kind and then came back :)

Prospective owners from all over the United States and Canada have looked in to adopt Wall-e.

"So many people are interested," Kloski told the Associated Press. "Now we're going through and trying to find the adoption applications for the best home."

Adopt-a-Pet: Brandy the Maltipoo [Updated]

Brandy People have been known to pay princely sums for so-called "designer dogs" at pet stores and over the Internet, so think of little Brandy (ID #A3693890) as the bargain of the century. Brandy, a female Maltipoo, is available for adoption at the L.A. County animal control department's Carson shelter. But of course, the important thing about adopting a dog like Brandy isn't saving money -- it's saving the life of a needy pet!

Breed: Maltese/poodle mix

Age: About 4 years; Weight: 12 pounds

About Brandy: A special favorite of shelter volunteers, she is described as extremely sweet and friendly, full of puppylike fun and joie de vivre.

"Brandy loves, loves, loves everyone she meets, and the feeling is mutual," says volunteer Evelyn Conley. "She wins them over right away!" Brandy is kenneled with other dogs at the Carson shelter and "they think she is fantastic as well," Conley continues. "She gets along with all of them wonderfully!"

For more information: Meet Brandy in person at the Carson shelter, located inexplicably at 216 W. Victoria St. in Gardena, or call the shelter at (310) 523-9566 with her ID number to learn more.

[Update 2/3: Brandy has been adopted; congratulations to her and her new family!]

Adopt-a-Pet: Robinson the beagle mix [Updated]

Robinson If you're looking to add a sweet, small and undeniably unique-looking dog to your family, allow us to introduce Robinson (ID #A1177355). This gentle dog with an adorably crooked underbite is  waiting for a new home at the L.A. Department of Animal Services' crowded South L.A. shelter.

Breed: Robinson's lineage probably contains some beagle, and shelter volunteers speculate that his thin, leggy frame could indicate some Italian greyhound in his background as well.

Age: About 1 year; Weight: 21 pounds

About Robinson: He's a favorite of shelter staff and volunteers, who are working diligently to make sure that he finds an adopter. They describe him as shy and gentle when he first meets a new person -- but when he begins to feel comfortable, his tail starts wagging wildly.

"He is the gentlest soul imaginable, with a wonderfully soft, sweet nature," says shelter volunteer and Animal Match Rescue Team Inc. founder Laura Beth Heisen. "This charmingly bashful boy snuggles beside you for comfort, and warms up appreciatively with any kindness you show."

For more information: Meet Robinson in person at the South L.A. shelter, 3612 11th Ave; watch a video to see him in action (he's even cuter than he is in this picture, if you can believe it); or call (888) 4LAPET1 with his ID number to learn more.

[Update 1/20: Robinson has been pulled from the shelter by a local pet rescue group. Congratulations, Robinson!]

Adopt-a-Pet: Bingo the terrier mix [Updated]

Bingo Bingo (ID #A1015244), a male terrier mix available for adoption at the L.A. Department of Animal Services' South L.A. shelter, is in need of a second chance -- and a good grooming session!

Breed: Terrier mix

Age: About 9 years   Weight: 14 pounds

About Bingo: This poor guy has already been through the shelter system at least once; he was adopted previously and lived for a time with a well-meaning owner who became unable to care for him due to health problems. Bingo's owner reluctantly returned him to the South L.A. shelter on Christmas Eve.

Bingo is friendly but a bit shy, and would probably benefit greatly from having his numerous mats removed and getting his curled-under toenails trimmed to allow him to walk more comfortably. Because he's already neutered, he can go home with his new owner immediately upon adoption.

For more information: Meet Bingo in person at the South L.A. shelter, 3612 11th Ave.; watch a video that shows off his sweet personality; or call (888) 4LAPET1 with his ID number to learn more.

[Update 1/5/2011: Bingo has been adopted; congratulations, Bingo!]

Adopt-a-Pet: Dorothy the dachshund-terrier mix [Updated]

Dorothy If you're in the market for a gentle and quiet pet, Dorothy (ID# A1168071), an adoptable dog at the L.A. Department of Animal Services' West L.A. animal shelter, just may be perfect for you.

Breed: Dachshund/terrier mix (perhaps with some Chihuahua thrown in for good measure)

Age: About 2 years; Weight: 9 pounds

About Dorothy: Found in a school parking lot, Dorothy seemed to be someone's pet -- one clue is that she had already been spayed --  but no one came to claim her at the shelter. She is described as friendly but calm and a little bit shy; she's happiest when she's sitting in someone's lap. She has the long body of a dachshund, a terrier's scruffiness and the diminutive stature of a Chihuahua.

"Dorothy sits in her cage and looks at you for love, and she is never jumpy," says Animal Services kennel supervisor Martha Lopez, who loves the little dog's polite demeanor. "Since Dorothy is so tiny and somewhat shy, she likes to feel safe and might do best in a home without small children or lots of loud noises," Lopez adds.

For more information: Meet Dorothy in person at the West L.A. shelter, 11361 W. Pico Blvd. (just west of Sawtelle Blvd.), or call (888) 4LAPET1 with her ID number to learn more.

[Update 1/20/2010: Dorothy has been adopted. Congratulations, Dorothy!]

Adopt-a-Pet: Pink-Nose Picasso the snowshoe kitten [Updated]

EastValleyKitten We're no longer at the height of kitten season, but that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of wonderful kittens waiting for new homes at animal shelters. For starters: This little guy with cute snowshoe markings (ID# A1167264), nicknamed "Pink-Nose Picasso" by volunteers at the L.A. Department of Animal Services' busy and always full-to-the-brim East Valley shelter.

Breed: Siamese, or mix thereof

Age: 3 months

About Picasso: He's playful, inquisitive and, according to volunteer and Animal Match Rescue Team Inc. founder Laura Beth Heisen, has a definite soft spot for games that involve chasing ribbons. He doesn't even mind posing for photos -- a major plus, since anyone lucky enough to adopt this fellow will surely want to document his good looks. "He is absolutely precious with that pink nose," Heisen says, "and he loves to cuddle."

For more information:Meet Picasso in person at the East Valley shelter, 14409 Vanowen St. in Van Nuys, or call (888) 4LAPET1 with his ID number to learn more.

[Update 11/22: Picasso has been adopted! Congratulations, Picasso!]

Adopt-a-Pet: Roxy the Chihuahua

Roxy If you're looking to adopt a tiny new family member, Roxy (ID# A416920) may just be the dog for you. Roxy is awaiting adoption at the Long Beach Animal Care Services shelter.

Breed: Deer-headed Chihuahua

Age: About 5 years

Weight: 5 pounds

About Roxy: She's a special favorite of shelter volunteers, who are working hard to find her a home with someone who will love her as much as they do! She came into the shelter as a stray on Oct. 20, and despite the fact that she had painted toenails -- which would seem to indicate that she'd been someone's pet -- no one came to claim her.

Since then, she's had a hard time dealing with the coldness of the shelter (which is why she's modeling a faux-fur-lined doggie coat in her photo here). But she's shown off her charming personality to everyone she's met. "Roxy is friendly, sweet and cute as could be, and she gets along very nicely with her shelter mates," shelter volunteer Louise Montgomery says.

For more information: Meet Roxy in person at the Long Beach Animal Care Center (Kennel 717), 7700 Spring Street, or call volunteer Louise Montgomery at (562) 897-5282 to learn more.

Adopt-a-Pet: Dexter the Chihuahua mix

Dexter Looking to bring a new dog into your family? Dexter, a little dog with a big, sunny personality, might be just the pet for you.

Breed: Chihuahua mix

Age: About 1 year

Weight: 7 pounds

About Dexter: As a large adoption event came to an end, this little guy was about to be loaded back into a van to return to a crowded municipal animal shelter. Fortunately, Forte Animal Rescue didn't let that happen.

"Dexter's right front leg never fully developed, so he has a little limp, but he doesn't know any difference and has the most positive attitude a dog can have; he's a 'glass half full' kind of boy," Forte founder Marie Ataki says. "His orthopedic veterinarian said Dexter is perfectly fine with his little handicap and he is a healthy, sweet little dog!" He's described as charming and affectionate.

For more information: Learn more about Dexter and other adoptable dogs and cats at Forte Animal Rescue's website, via e-mail at adoption@FARescue.org or by calling (310) 362-0321.

Handsome Looking to adopt a new cat? Say hello to Handsome (ID# 10-04843), a male brown tabby cat who's available for adoption now at spcaLA's P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village & Education Center in Long Beach.

Breed: Domestic shorthair

Age: Approximately 4 years

About Handsome: Shelter staff say the word "noble" describes him to a T! He's mellow and independent, but "can also be a lap cat when the mood strikes," according to the animal rescue organization. Because Handsome likes his space, staffers think he'd prefer to live in a home with no young children. Older kids are A-OK!
