Oh my! A dog birthday party in Angeleno Heights

Cleo's birthday party

Is it overindulgent to throw a birthday party for your animal companion? Well, maybe just a little.

Sunday, my Great Dane, Cleo, celebrated her eighth birthday at a breakfast bash on our front lawn. She'd never had a party before, and I thought it was high time to remedy the situation. Besides, it seemed like a wonderful opportunity to have neighbors over for some doughnuts and coffee.

They came -- about 25 of them -- with their human companions in tow.

While the folks enjoyed an assortment of doughnuts (as did Cleo's Rhodesian ridgeback boyfriend, Banff, who downed six twisted glazed doughnuts before we could stop him), her four-legged friends dined on assorted doggie hors d'oeuvres (rawhide shoes, bone cookies, chews) and peanut-and-carob birthday cakes from Three Dog Bakery at the L.A. Farmer's Market.

A good time was had by all.  More photos after the jump!

Cleo's first guest arrives with flowers. "I've never been to a dog birthday party before," he said.  Later that morning, he sampled some of Cleo's cake -- not realizing it was just for her four-legged friends. How was it? "It tasted a bit dry but otherwise pretty good."

Cleopatra, a.k.a Cleo, waits patiently for her guests to arrive.

A balloon pops and two pups hide underneath the table. Or maybe they just wanted to be closer to the cake?

Sometimes parties can be tiring. One pup takes a short nap on the lawn alongside Cleo's birthday octopus.

Cleo's birthday cake was a huge success ... only crumbs remained.
