The fact that the economic downturn has affected pets as well as people has been well-documented, but rarely does it seem more real than when we hear the stories of the recession’s animal victims.

Mayo (ID# A1038639), a border collie mix up for adoption at the North Central animal shelter, has just such a story.

Mayo found himself at the shelter when his owners lost their home. Now, at about 10 years old, he’s in the market for a new family. He’s neutered and is ‘calm, well-mannered, docile, sweet and would make an ideal companion for an older couple or single person,’ according to Jennifer Fearing of the Humane Society of the United States, who met Mayo during a recent appearance on KTLA News.

‘Despite the good care he’s getting, Mayo definitely is mopey,’ Fearing says. (We would be, too -- but we hope he has a reason to cheer up soon.) Meet him in person at the North Central shelter, 3201 Lacy St.,or call 888-4LAPET1 with his ID number for more information.

UPDATE: Mayo, now renamed Jax, has been adopted and is living the high life with his new family in the Pacific Palisades. Congratulations, Mayo Jax!
