Photographer Laura Rauch captured this great shot of a sea otter relaxing in Kachemak Bay, Alaska.

By the early 1900s, sea otters were nearly extinct as a result of the fur trade -- at their lowest point, only about 1,000 to 2,000 remained. Today, the species is in significantly better shape (their population is estimated at about 100,000 to 150,000 by National Geographic), and sea otters are protected by law.

As adorable as these creatures are, they are actually members of the weasel family!
