Chinchillas, native to the Andes mountains in South America, clean themselves in the wild by rolling in volcanic ash. (The ash absorbs oils that collect in their fur, which is known for its extreme density.) In captivity, the closest they’ll get to a volcano is a ‘dust bath’ -- a tub or bowl that’s filled with dusting powder sold in many pet stores.

We only wish those few who still wear chinchilla fur could see a dust bath in action -- we can’t imagine that anyone could watch these little rodents’ sheer glee and still feel indifferent to the cruelty of killing them for coats!
