An 8-month-old American Staffordshire terrier puppy is recovering after being stabbed seven times with a sword Tuesday night. The attack happened in a Mission Viejo apartment complex.

The puppy, named Azure, allegedly was attacked by 26-year-old Justin Carrafield, who has been arrested on charges of cruelty to animals, battery and marijuana cultivation. He’s being held on $20,000 bail.

Azure escaped and was found in the apartment courtyard by the complex’s security guard, said Orange County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jim Amormino. More details from our colleague Corina Knoll at the L.A. Now blog:

‘She was just scared. She had her tail between her legs,’ said Danielle Lawrence, a receptionist at [Alicia Pet Care Center in Mission Viejo, where Azure received treatment]. ‘She was in a lot of pain, crying, but she wanted everyone to pet her.’ The center began a fundraising campaign Wednesday to cover Azure’s medical care, and has already collected enough for the puppy’s treatment, which is estimated to be between $4,000 and $5,000, said a spokeswoman with the center. Azure is on pain medication and antibiotics and will stay at Alicia for an undetermined amount of time.

A statement posted on the Alicia Pet Care Center’s website says staffers are ‘overjoyed to report she is recovering very well from the surgeries done Wednesday to repair her internal injuries and had [a long night’s] rest after a day filled with media interviews and continued treatments. We hope her celebrity will enable her to receive the donations necessary to continue her treatment and assure her happy and healthy future.’
