It may be New Year’s Day, but it’s still not too late to pick out your calendar for the year to come.

Last year, a calendar called Hotties for Ron Paul got tongues wagging. Deirdre Franklin (stage name: ‘Little Darling’) hopes that her Pinups for Pitbulls calendar will get tails wagging in 2009 -- the proceeds benefit pit bull rescue.

Franklin (pictured above with her own rescued pit, Carla Lou) became involved with the much-maligned breed when she was volunteering at an animal shelter and a woman brought in a stray pit bull. From the Associated Press:

‘She thought she was saving its life by bringing it in,’ recalls Franklin. ‘I took the dog and put her in the kennel -- she was a sweetheart, totally gentle.’ But the shelter had a policy of euthanizing all pit bulls, and would neither let Franklin adopt the dog nor release it to a pit bull rescue.

Following the incident, the newly minted activist adopted Carla Lou (who’d been rescued after having been left for dead in a basement) and didn’t look back. She’s been working with pit bull rescue -- and educating the public about the breed -- ever since.

The Pinups for Pitbulls calendar, now in its third edition, features burlesque models posing with their own dogs (an exception is the 2009 calendar’s ‘cover dog,’ Ciera, who is up for adoption). Franklin hopes to raise more than $10,000 for rescue through calendar sales.
