We were delighted to learn from our friend and colleague Deborah Netburn’s story ‘Chickens as pets: city living with a farm feel’ that it is indeed possible to raise and house fowl -- right here in Los Angeles!

In fact, in reporting on this urban oddity, Deborah met several Angelenos who do just that -- even making their own fancy chicken coops from scratch. Color us fascinated! And there are many sound reasons -- aside from the obvious egg-laying -- for owning an Urban Chicken, as Deborah explains:

Any urban dweller interested in living green has good reason to keep chickens. They reduce garbage by eating your leftovers mixed in with their feed, and they will pick off those irritating caterpillars destroying the vegetable garden. Their poop is an excellent composting aid, and they will even trim your grass and weed for you, if you let them. Added benefits: farm-fresh eggs right from the backyard and the amusement of impressing friends with an interesting new pet -- and for many it is a pet, not a future entree.

The wheels are turning in our brains already. Is it possible to sneak a squawking bird past the landlord? Maybe for us it will have to remain a pipe dream (for now), but if you’re itching to learn more we highly recommend reading the story. And if you have an Urban Chicken, or know someone who does, let us know in the comments section!
