Remembering presidential pets past

November 7, 2008 |  5:19 pm

Lyndon B. Johnson was criticized for picking up his beagles, Him and Her, by the ears. He said it was good for them.

With all the talk surrounding the Obamas' future pet (the discussion even made it into the president-elect's first press conference), it's only natural to take a look back at presidential pets of yesteryear.

With that in mind, we'd like to draw your attention to a photo gallery displayed on Latimes.com today. It's chock-full of all your favorites (Millie, anyone?) and lesser-known characters, including Benjamin Harrison's pet goat, Old Whiskers.  (Yes, seriously!)

Above, Lyndon B. Johnson lifts one of his two beagles, Him & Her, by the ears (which created quite a stir at the time).
