Baby rhino debuts at San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park

And now presenting Kaya, the newest Indian rhinoceros at the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park. Born July 7, her debut was Monday at the park’s Asian Plains exhibit.

By the numbers: the 300-pounder is the 56th Indian rhino born at the park, the 10th to Goalpara. Her name means ‘immense joy’ in the Pali dialect of Asia.

First indications are that Kaya, pictured above with her mother, is precocious.

She took quickly to the water hole, swimming with her mother. ‘I haven’t seen a calf as young as Kaya get that deep into a watering hole,’ said Andy Blue, animal care manager for the park.
