We recently went to visit some of the animals at the West L.A. shelter, and did we ever meet some wonderful dogs.

Consider Libby here (above). She came to sit with us at the door of her enclosure, pressing her whole body into the chain link. How thoughtful of her to give us easy access for ear-scratching purposes! Libby is already spayed and is about 11 years old (making her eligible for L.A. Animal Services’ new Seniors 4 Seniors program). She’s listed as a German Shepherd mix (but she sure looks like she has some Lab thrown in for good measure to us) and she’s ID# A0384804.

Little Chocolate (ID# A0947519), above left, is an unspayed female Chihuahua mix who’s about 4 years old. She came right up to visit with us and was super-friendly. Oliver (ID# A0764380), above right, is a neutered male German Shepherd mix who’s approximately 3. He is just as handsome as he looks in this swell picture.

Cooper here (ID# A0910483), above, might look a little threatening at first glance -- American Staffordshire Terriers get a pretty bum rap. But this guy greeted us enthusiastically and was very appreciative of the few minutes of head-scratching time we spent with him. Cooper’s a neutered male who’s about 3 years old.

And finally, may we reintroduce Scruffy (whose sad story we first told you about earlier this week). He’s a terrier mix whose looks match his name (and we say that with affection), is unneutered and approximately 10 years old.

Scruffy’s had a rough go of it, but he’s bounced back and is quite a little character who wags his tail at passersby and enjoys going for strolls outside on the grass. He’s ID# A0964196.

All these dogs are up for adoption at the West L.A. shelter, located at 11361 West Pico Blvd. (near the intersection of Pico and Sawtelle). You can inquire further about any of them by calling 888-4LAPET1 with the ID numbers listed here.

UPDATE 9/22/08: We’ve just learned that Scruffy was adopted this past weekend -- congratulations Scruffy!
