Mad moms hold budget protest

A group of mothers are staging a protest on Friday to send the message "that the only thing mothers really want for Mother's Day is a decent education for their kids."

They're planning to wear white as a sign of unity and gather on Wilshire Boulevard outside the offices of Assemblywoman Karen Bass in Mid-City L.A. Their target: the millions of dollars the governor has proposed cutting from the education budget. You can read about the budget plan here.

The rally began with five mothers of students at Castle Heights Elementary School in the Beverlywood neighborhood. Organizer Maria von Hartz says while "we really want it to be mom-focused," men are welcome, and she expects lots of strollers too.

I am glad they are taking it to the streets! the budget cuts that are being proposed will cripple the already weak LAUSD. how are we expected to compete in a global economy when we are not giving our kids the tools to suceed. i guess i will be putting my kids in private school.

Where does all the money go? A look at the LAUSD budget shows taxpayors paying 510K per class of 30 per year!! Of course most of that money is not spent in the classroom or used to pay teachers. A huge chunk is frittered away on administrative big wigs and their staff doing all sorts of "important work" having meetings and more meetings. It is time for school vouchers. LAUSD is an absolute failure.

I wanna join the mad mom's to protest the educational budget cuts. Where can I get more information about this grassroots activist group!

Ronny

When are u people going to wake up and smell the coffee... The LAUSD is wasting millions of dollars on construction of taj mahal schools ....look at what happened with Belmont... we need to hold the LAUSD accountable for their decisions or remove them from office///very simple

TSF Global economy and LAUSD? Good one. Look what goes in and what comes out. If the "global economy" demands gardeners, fast food workers, garment workers, car washers etc. then you would be correct. Unfortunately you are not.

A Mom

I am one of the moms who was there that day and I can say it's pretty sad that people win millions of dollars on the lottery and the school budgets get cut. Is there something wrong with this picture. California wants our kids to be fit, educated in arts, music, and science yet they want to cut all those out. This is not good. There needs to be an investigation on the lottery system and papers need to be filed as to where the money is going. I am very upset by this because my daughter is entering the 3rd grade in September and my son in Kinder and I don't want to see them in larger classes with less education. This is just not right. LA TIMES please do an investigation into the California Lottery and make sure our schools get the money they are entitled to.

Thanks,
