Tom Stanley-Becker is an AP dropout. He writes in today's Times about his decision to skip Friday's exam in U.S. history. Not that the University of Chicago's University High junior isn't ambitious.

Tom is right on. I teach AP and there is just too much info to cover. The topic outline needs to be pared down. However, I do think he should have taken the test because he will have to take tests all of his life and any time you can challenge yourself, that is a positive thing.
If he'll have to take tests all of his life, then skipping one or two optional ones won't hurt. There will be other opportunities. And with college on the horizon, those opportunities aren't all that far away.
